COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
A pale, strong ale. A complex and sophisticated IPA, using assertive American hops. Aromas of resinous pine, orange and just the right level of citrussiness. A dry finish and moderate bitterness make this deceptively quaffable for its 5.4%, so take care!
ABV: 5.4%
Colour: Golden
Hops: Simcoe, Chinook

Had this in two different bars recently, this review is of a hand pulled pint from the excellent ’Wrekin Inn’ Wellington, Shropshire (Oct 2011). Golden colour, thin white head, not the best looking beer on earth, but OK. The smells were of citrusy hops (they are American apparently, Simcoe and Chinook)and some pine like resinous. Good mix of flavours, well blended with the hops taking centre stage and the hop hovvering in the background, but never far away. This is fairly strong for a UK IPA, but it hides the alcohol well and although hoppy it is nowhere near the West Coast of the US (currently) style of hop crazy brews.

Bottle 50cl poured into tulip glass. Strong aromatic aromas, slight lemon poured with white head, quickly dropped to good lacing. The taste is hops backed up with a malty body, but the hops are strong enough to give a good kick. Have tried other B/Monkey ales and they are really starting to grow on me. Ape Ale is well worth a try for those looking for a strong pale ale or IPA.

Cask (gravity) - Norwich Beer Festival 2011. Medium sized bubbly lasting white head; clear golden orange body. Zesty, crisp & juicy US hop profile - lemon, grapefruit, peach & tangerine. Not as juicy or crisp on the tongue & slightly toastier but each of the aforementioned characteristics remain in place. Medium body, lingerin hop finish, mostly soft mouthfeel, quite firm & rounded on the tongue.

Cask (gravity) @ The 16th Reading Beer and Cider Festival 2010, Reading, Berkshire England.

Clear medium yellow orange color with a average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, moderate to light light heavy hoppy, citrus, hop oil. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and heavy bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20100430]

Cask handpull, The Crown, Stockport, Greater Manchester. Orange-gold with milky lace and a white slick. Soap and apricot aroma with hints of grassiness. Soap dish licks to the fore, almond showing, neat orange cordial, delayed bitterness. Full bodied, not enough going on. BM are a favourite of mine, and in isolation I might rate this higher but it pales beside the Pictish and is ill-suited for sun-kissed alfresco glugging (yes, in Stockport). Needs the hops turning up. Bit disappointing from The Monkey.
