COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the 1940ís, Belgian-Style Pale Ales grew in popularity and were ordered by the round due to their balanced taste. Rounder, our expression of this sessionable style, is crafted with hibiscus and orange peel for a hint of spiciness and touch of wheat for a smoother, rounder taste.

Malts: Pale, Imported Caramel, Imported Light Caramel, White Wheat
Hops: Cascade
Our Twist: Orange Peel, Hibiscus

12 ounce bottle from Hayduke that we had together via facebook chat. This beer is clear amber with a beige head that leaves cool looking sticky lacing. This smells like an English bitter but without the hops. Malts. I made it a point to go into this beer with an open mind. With that being said, this is a failure as a Belgian Ale. However, the label says it is a Belgian Style Pale, whatever that is. It is much closer to an amber with sugar added. A bit of toffee and gentle fruit. Oh so light bitterness. I taste just a bit of spiciness that is tasted on the very tip of my tongue. The hibiscus is tasted although it is light. This beer improved with warming. There is some fruity bitterness and brown sugar is tasted late. This improved with warming and after I got over it being anything Belgian.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It had a best before date of 5/19/14 and came as part of a 12-pack for $14.47 ($1.20 per bottle or $0.10 per ounce).

Appearance: Label indicates this is a "Belgian-Style Pale", but the color is clearly that of an amber. The copper hue is quite pretty, though there is zero carbonation visible. It pours to a small, off white, foamy head which laces and retains poorly.

Smell: Slight oxidized aroma of cardboard. Some toffee and caramel sweetness, but smells old or fouled.

Taste: Thereís a lot of things wrong with Blue Moon Rounder, which is a shame because the description and even the ingredients list makes the beer seem very interesting. The beer fails for two reasons: itís completely mis-marketed; it has off-flavors.

Thereís a distinct character to the palette of this beer. Itís familiar of that of a standard American amber, only not a good example of one. While it does have some flavors of toffee and caramel on the first half, the second half is rife with off-flavors. There seems to be indications of oxidization and DMS as it finishes with a sharp, harsh, astringency. There is no Belgian yeast character at all, nor is there any hibiscus or orangepeel as advertised. The flavors start to worsen as the beer warms.

Drinkability: This is one of those beers where the drinkability is actually pretty good, but the actual palate itself is not. The mouthfeel is thick but overtly tepid - a beer of the style should be quite crisp and bubbly. Itís easy to suck down, though it does leave a dry, starchy aftertaste. For 5.6% ABV itís not too heavy, though it should have more flavor than whatís here (more good flavor, that is).

translucent amber with foamy white head. medium body with high carbonation.

aroma: dominated by stoney minerality; with some hibiscus, orange, and caramel malt notes.

taste: bread crust minerality, with some caramel sweetness and wheat tartness, and an odd fruity hibiscus character. some rubbery yeast phenols and sweaty dampfbier notes as well.

Bottle. A- Odorless, bland, subtle caramel. A- Copper color, hazy liquid, minimal head. T- Bland, P- Light body, average texture, medium carbonation, abrupt finish. O- A poor representation of a Belgian Ale. Not only that, but this has hardly any taste or aroma or anything. If I close my eyes, I could swear I was drinking water. Just a disappointment.

Pours a clear amber with a quickly fleeting 1 finger white head. Aromas of sweet malt, grain, very subtle spice. Smooth mouthfeel, caramel malt followed by slight orange sweetness, spice. Rather weak linear flavor profile leaving a very light metallic like aftertaste. Not bad but not good either. Whereís the Belgian in this beer?

Tulip glass. Clear copper with almost no head/lacing. A nice nose of hops and malts. OK tasting beer. The malts stick out a bit on the tongue.

Decent smell kinda caramel and honey slightly, looks like a normal amber colored Belgian, taste is straight forward not too much goin on but very smooth and drinkable, I wonít turn it down but wonít buy it either

Poured a clear amber. A little sweet and astringent with a hint of spice. Not enjoyable. Not sure what this is, but it certainly isnít a Belgian ale.

UPDATED: MAY 14, 2014 Sometimes, you have different opinions about a beer in retrospect. I disliked Rounder when I first had it. In hindsight, though... it makes me even angrier. The fact that this beer calls itself a Belgian Style Pale Ale is almost beyond belief. This is the pussification of a great style for the sake of mass consumption. Too little hops. No distinct yeast flavor. No balls. In other words, Rounder sucks.
