Interpretation of French/Belgian Biere de Noel (Christmas beer). Blue Mountain Barrel House’s Blitzen is a dark ruby-hued ale fermented with Rochefort Trappist brewery’s signature yeast. Light notes of dark stone fruits blend with the subtle spiciness of the yeast to produce a well-balanced 7% alcohol delicious seasonal beer.

On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh). Pours a clear dark copper with a finger of head. Combination of fruit and spice aroma, with spice (nutmeg/cinnamon) taking over upon tasting it. Nice winter/seasonal ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft. Black tan head. I got ginger bread and cinnamon in the nose. Dried fruit and cinnamon taste but a bit murky.

10oz pour at Triangle Wine. Good aroma sour sweet. More yeast with some roasted malt streak. Clean brownish orange color. Ok head and lace. Tart flavor. Medium body smooth creamy mouthfeel, tart finish. Good. Not making want another, but pleasant enough. Interesting mix on yeast and malt.

Sampled on draft at the brewery. Clear amber pour with chestnut highlights and ring of near white head. Yeasty belgian style nose and a distinct spiciness in the flavor. Fruity, like dark cherry and molasses. Sweet, but not overly so. Not horrible, but nothing I would need to have again.

Keg @ Blue Mountain. The pour’s deep amber with a small head. Mashed banana nose, Belgian yeast. Some marshmallow. Pear. Taste is caramel, nuts. Sweet banana, rustic yeastiness. Medium body, fine carb. Solid.

THOUGHTS: A little more subtle than I was expecting at first, but it kept improving as it warmed. Very Belgian. Nice and sort of special for Christmas, but not very Christmasy. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, very dark red with a huge, off-white head that mostly lasted and diminished at a painfully slow rate and left good lacing. The aroma was nice but a little weak and contained moderate candi sugar; very light hops; moderate to heavy spicy Belgian yeast; raisin; prune; apple; and cherry. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and slightly acidic; while the finish was moderately acidic and lightly bitter with an average to long duration. There was caisugar, molasses, caramel, dark fruits, spicy yeast, cherry, prune, raisin, hints of brown sugar, a little apple, more yeast, slight hops, hints of earthy and metallic hops and yeast and hints of cocoa. The medium body was creamy with soft, but very tingly carbonation and a dry and lightly astringent finish.

Pretty dark copper pour with a huge tan head that very slowly dwindles but doesn’t leave much lacing. The aroma consists of light spices. The taste is pretty spicy up front with somewhat of an abrupt finish that leaves the palate slightly dry. The mouthfeel is pretty light and creamy until the finish. Not bad but not all that memorable.
