COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
NOT A SPICED BEER! Our regular Nitro Porter has gotten all dressed up for Halloween! Brewed with four crates of pumpkins and Mexican cocoa nibs, our Fall version of porter has a real taste of the season. We gutted and roasted the pumpkins (over one whole pumpkin per barrel of beer) acquired for us by AM FOG across the street and added them to the mash as a supplement to the barley malt. Used in this way, the pumpkins simply serve as an additional form of fermentable sugar for the beer, honoring the ingenuity of our thrifty colonial forbears who could make beer out of just about anything. So no, this isn’t one of those pumpkin ales that tastes like your grandma’s pie, this is the real thing. And we’ve added barely any hops to this batch, letting the deep bitter flavors of the cocoa beans do the balancing work for the brew, along with adding a subtle chocolaty flavor that is delicious. 40 IBUs, 6.5% alc./vol.

Served on nitro tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear ruby-brown color with a typical tan nitro head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is chocolate, lightly roasted malts and coffee. The pumpkin notes are very faint, and as this is a chocolatey beer anyways it doesn’t add too much of an extra dimension. The taste is milk chocolate, bitter, banana and pumpkin with a bitter leafy hop finish. Smooth, medium bodied. A nice effort but this could use more of the pumpkin flavor.

ruskiimperial (308) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAR 22, 2010
This pours a medium to full body with some very tan head which had good retention. Aroma has a good bit of chocolate with a bit of coffee. The taste has strong chocolate with some toffee. The pumpkin is slightly prevalent on the aftertaste, though its a bit overshadowed by the chocolate. The medium level alcohol is not really noticeable. A rather interesting dark beer. Certainly not an imperial porter but its definitely not a lighter bodied english type porter either.
