COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A new brew in honor of owners Taylor’s and Mandi’s new son, Evan (and with a winking nod to the Steve Carrell movie filmed around the corner in Crozet). This beer is in the style of a Dusseldorf "sticke altbier" - originating from the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany. It is the cousin to Cologne’s Kolschbier, in that they are both termed "obergärige" - top fermented - beers brewed in the alt ("old" or pre-lager beer) style. Alts range from deep gold to dark copper in color and have a firm, hoppy dryness to back up their malty undertones. We’ve created our alt on the deep gold color end of the spectrum, but in the "sticke" (secret) category, that signifies a higher-gravity beer that, in Dusseldorf, is brewed as a reward for local customers and is often not listed on the menu (thus the "secret" part). Evan Altmighty was brewed with Pilsner, Munich, and Caramel Munich malts and hopped with German Hallertau Tradition hops. The same cologne-based strain of ale yeast for fermentation provides light fruit and bready notes and aids in the prolonged cold aging of this ale often treated like a lager after primary fermentation. 30 IBUs, 6.6% ABV.

Aromas of raspberries, blackberries, raisins, rhubarb, light caramel, and very subtle cocoa. Appearance is clear ruby with white head foam. Tastes moderately bitter, with a light fruity sweetness. On the palate it is medium-full-bodied with average carbonation, and finishes with noble hop bitterness lifted by fruity malts.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 11/21/12

Aroma: This one has a caramel nose, a little bit of other malts, and some hints of fruit
Appearance: It has a dark orange pour with a sticky white head and fairly heavy lace
Flavor: This one has a clean malt flavor, some light sweetness, and a light bitterness
Palate: This one has a light-mid body, with a nice, clean feel and an average carbonation
Overall Impression:  This one was a solid Alt. I have no idea why it was listed under hoppy on the menu, as it is not, but still, it was a reasonably tasty beer.

I certainly wouldn’t call this beer remarkable, but it is quite drinkable. They classify it as "hoppy" on the beer list, which is laughable for someone coming from the west coast. In fact, an altbier being hoppy is ridiculous anywhere. Carmel, ripe fruits and malt dominated. Good balance, but definitely not "hoppy". I’d be happy to drink 2-3 of these with any of their meals, as it is a fine background beer to a wide variety of eats.

Pours a clear medium brown with ruby/copper tones under a small off-white head. Aroma of light sweet fruit and yeasty bread dough. The flavor is lightly sweet on the front with some hop bitterness in the finish. Interesting beer.

Draft at Churchkey. Mostly clear red plum colored pour with a decent frothy white head. Nose holds roasted malt, almond, touches of raisin and fresh fig, and maybe very light hop notes. Flavor is much the same, with that nice nutty chestnut bitterness and good malt sweetness. Well made stuff.

Draft. Pours gold with a white head. Light grainy and toasty aroma. The flavor is clean and crisp, with pale grainy malts and light flowery hops. Good stuff.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear orange with a thick white head. Aroma of grainy, cereally malts, bready malt, and light fruits. Flavor is quite sweet upfront with light fruits, honey, and sweet pale malts, some breadiness in the finish. Ok overall but definitely on the sweet side. 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)

Pours a rich orange/copper, topped with a nice white head. The aroma is a blend of grassy/graininess. Taste - the general sweet caramel is balanced nicely with a crisp bitterness. Very drinkable.

Flavor is heavy malt (cookie, grainy, toasted, meal, biscuit), light hops (earthy), and average esters (fruity) with notes of honey. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth and creaminess with a sweet finish.
