A new brew in honor of owners Taylor’s and Mandi’s new son, Evan (and with a winking nod to the Steve Carrell movie filmed around the corner in Crozet). This beer is in the style of a Dusseldorf "sticke altbier" - originating from the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany. It is the cousin to Cologne’s Kolschbier, in that they are both termed "obergärige" - top fermented - beers brewed in the alt ("old" or pre-lager beer) style. Alts range from deep gold to dark copper in color and have a firm, hoppy dryness to back up their malty undertones. We’ve created our alt on the deep gold color end of the spectrum, but in the "sticke" (secret) category, that signifies a higher-gravity beer that, in Dusseldorf, is brewed as a reward for local customers and is often not listed on the menu (thus the "secret" part). Evan Altmighty was brewed with Pilsner, Munich, and Caramel Munich malts and hopped with German Hallertau Tradition hops. The same cologne-based strain of ale yeast for fermentation provides light fruit and bready notes and aids in the prolonged cold aging of this ale often treated like a lager after primary fermentation. 30 IBUs, 6.6% ABV.

Slightly hazy deep amber coloured body with a muddied and ruby brown glow and a perfectly dense, two centimetre tall tan head - can’t get better looking than this for the style. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, toffee, nuts, apples and some pleasant raisin notes coupled with some yeast scents as well. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour with some metallic, mushroomy and nutty flavours and a rather mild finish showing the malt and a touch of sweetness. Aftertaste is slightly more well-rounded with some caramel and toffee sweetness battling out the earthy and nutty malt that encapsulates the beer, all with a pleasant english-style hop character. Overall, a nice altbier with a very earthy malt profile and a pleasant sweetness coupled with a noticeable complexity that lasts! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 01-May-2014 for US$0,99 (yes, under a buck!) sampled at home in Washington on 02-September-2014.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a stange. The appearance was a decent looking hazy amber to red color with a two finger white foamy head that dissipated within seconds. The lacing was somewhat there and slid for the most part. The smell was yeasty and malty with a touch of light cocoa inside of a subtle breadiness. The taste was mainly the same thing. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat subdued and carried a fair rolling smoothness over my tongue. Overall, pretty good altbier I’d have again.

355ml bottle (Birofilia2014, Zywiec)
Sweet almost chocolatey roast aroma. Very full smooth palate, moussey carbonation. Rich brown bready roast, a little sweet. Touch of nutty bitterness in the finish. Does taste a bit likie an Alt, but there’s something not quite right about it. A touch soapy. But a decent malty brew.

355ml bottle. Mid amber pour with about a finger of head. Bready caramel malts and leafy noble hop bouquet. Pretty straightforward but good. Taste is very much the same. Sweet, slightly syrupy feel to it. Mildly interesting taste but the beer itself doesn’t really manage to stand out too much.

Color caramelo limpio con espuma marfil regular. Aromas de cereales dulces y azúcar moreno. Cuerpo ligero, inicio dulce de caramelo y azúcar moreno, con final moderadamente amargo, con toques herbales, algo citricos y muy seco. Bien

35,5 cl bottle @ Beer Temple. Aroma is sweetish with American hops, bready malt and toffee. Flavour as American hops, toffee, caramel and hints of bread. Altbier in American way; like American strong ale with some maltiness typical to Altbiers. Sweet, but not in typical way for this style. Would not recognize this as alt, on blind tasting my guess would be American strong ale.
