3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Proteus93 (65) - Charlottesville, USA - SEP 29, 2008
Pours a very deep murky brown, with red highlights, letting just the littlest bit of light through. Head is thick and frothy, lasting forever. Very nice.
Bready, some caramels and raisiny scents. A touch of hops come through on a deep sniff. A complex, but not overpowering aroma.
Quite a nice balance through the body... quite similar to the aroma, with the malty bread-like, caramel tastes. A note of hops and darker fruits, with an added spicy alcohol note on the finish. Becomes maybe just a tad sweet on the overall finish, but not too badly. A touch of a medicinal taste in there that seems a little out of place.
A nice, full, and round body... a little on the sticky syrup side, but again, not horribly bad at all.
This is a good effort... perhaps not quite as spectacular as their others, but still a decent abbey-style ale, nonetheless. For its class, it has quite the competition, but it comes out alright. I’m glad I got 6, and look forward to it again on tap, as well.

Fruity, herbal aroma. Intense red-brown, clear with a thin head. A little astringent. Woody. The usual musty dubbel flavor with toasted overtones. Well-bittered. Long herbal bitter finish with light diacetyl. OK, drinkable. On tap, Capital Ale House, Richmond.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 shakespeare33 (197) - Washington DC, USA - MAR 16, 2011
six pack from whole foods restons. pours a dark cinnamon coated amber with a two finer head.. smells of caramel and yeast coated slight hops. that trademark sweetness lingers in the background. initial hit to to the palate is that of biscuits and light earth tones, a syrupy sweetness with a pinch of bitterness on the aftertaste. very much in line with the an ale of this classification but the complexity is a bit better. I cant put my finger on the flavoring of yeast but its a pleasant surprise. all in all a good ale. and good representation.
