COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blue Mountain Barrel House series. Naturally occurring lactobacillus was cultivated at our brewery in old bourbon barrels that once held Dark Hollow Imperial Stout. We’ve aged a new batch of Dark Hollow in these barrels-gone-wild and let nature do its thing. The result is a dance of complexity; naturally produced lactic acid interacts with the alcohol of the beer to create sweet-sour esters atop the dark malt flavors and adds a layer of depth to this ale no possible by fermentation with brewers’ yeast alone.

Very dark brown, brown head. Nose is blue cheese, apple seed. Flavour is like a dark grape seed. Very distinctive. Absolutely loved it.

Bottle, caged and corked. Pours dark and brooding, yet liquid and easy, a thin head. Intriguing aroma, hinting at both sourness and rich chocolate. The flavor delivers, an interesting stout base, with a definite sweet/sour dominating tilt. Some may not care for it, but I love it. (#5170, 7/17/2013)

750 from State Line. Poured hazy blackish brown with tan head that dissipated quickly. Nose was cherries, funky yeasty malt. Taste of roasty dark malt with tart cherry, cacao, and funky yeasty hoppy finishers. This one had a 75% rate of "I’d buy this if I saw it again", which is exceptional.

850th Virginia Rating! 750 mL bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear dark brown color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon, earth, stone fruits, mild tartness. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, bourbon, wood, lots of fruits, mild tartness. Medium bodied. Nice beer, but the sourness lends more of a fruity note than any real sour.

Pours a dark brown color with a very large light brown head. Smells a bit like souring grapes. Pretty good aroma. Some yeast. Taste is slightly sweet with a very creamy mouthfeel. Probably due to the bourbon. Slight sour taste. Would have liked a bit more sour. I think the bourbon adds quite a bit to this beer. Pretty tasty.

Pours an opaque dark brown to black, with two fingers of fluffy choco head on top. Rich chocolate- and caramel-scented malt aroma. A pleasant yoghurty berry-like fruitiness blends well in. Also some fine bourbon notes and hint of wood. Full body. Smooth and juicy on the palate. Big malt base. Mild roast, choco and caramel. Also a prominent lactic acidity, featuring red berries, raisins and cherries. Faint bourbon tones. Very comlex and very tasty. Imperial Stout meets Oud bruin! [ Corked and wired 1pint 9.4. fl.oz. From a trade with Travlr back at Toer de Geuze 2013. Thanks man! ]

Bottle shared by jmborggren. Poured a clear reddish brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sour & sweet toasted malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy sour & sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet & sour finish of moderate duration. This is a solid beer.

Bottle. Self admitted mediocre on sour dark beers, sure there are exceptions and we’ll have to see if this is one. Pours a dark brown/black color with a tan head. Dark cherry and fruit notes with a very evident sourness. Bourbon in the nose? maybe a little but not overly so. Roast, coffee, and sour cherries in the flavor. Pretty smooth mouthfeel. Slight leather bitterness in the back end. 10% doesn’t really show that much. An interesting beer, a little sweet, but actually I don’t think it is that bad.
