2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 willblake (2601) - Bel Air, Maryland, USA - SEP 29, 2008
20080929 12oz from Spirits on Sunset. First off, this has got to be one of the worst, most nonsensical, ugliest labels I’ve ever seen...so kudos for that. At least it stood out on the shelf. Cream soda appearance with lasting thin white head. Aroma is nutty, toffee, diacetyl - rats! - Ah crud, first sip is a kick in the nuts of dreaded diacetyl, some background notes of dms, too, oh joy. Rather thin bodied, aggressive tingly eff, quite unpleasant, really, and late on the finish a slickness where it would be nice to find some earthy hop snap. Trying to find something good to say, but I guess it’s not going to happen. This must not be the same beer that was widely accepted by raters who have had it on tap.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 DocLock (5966) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 26, 2008
Draft at DRE. Pours dark straw with off-white head. Nose is malt, midl brown sugar and hops. Tastes of malt, brown sugar, hops, a bit watery, with a smooth but not terribly complex finish, and some diacetyl noted also.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BiddleBrau (659) - Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 25, 2008
Light copper with thin white head. Toasted caramel malt aroma. Carbonation enhances hop profile but still maintains a slightly sweet caramel malt profile and finishes clean. Nothing bold but an easy beer to drink.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 tgncc (1913) - Bellmore, New York, USA - SEP 24, 2008
A good representative of the style. The appearance is classic for a Marzen, a gold/orange color, slightly closer to gold. The aroma is caramel malts, a little bit of spice. The flavor, also true to the styel, is very malty, bready, and on the sweet side, the only distinguishing feature here is the spicyness of the hops. The finish dissipates quickly, with a faint echo of the malts and the spicy hops on the way down. Perfectly acceptable Marzen
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 thenick (766) - North Bellmore, New York, USA - SEP 24, 2008
Bottle. Pours a clear copper with a quickly-dissipating off-white head. The aroma is heavy malt with very litle grain, which is a surprise for the style. The taste is slightly malty, slightly spicy, and a complete watery finish. I was disappointed and didn’t even finish the bottle.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 McGarnigle (454) - Rochester, New York, USA - SEP 23, 2008
Bottle. Clear copper, not much head. Malty, toasty. Hops at the end to balance and dry. Slightly spicy and a hard to describe ale-ish quality at the finish. Not caramelly like many American Okts. Pretty heavy fizz in the mouth.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BREWMUSKCLES (1685) - New Jersey, USA - SEP 15, 2008
a good representative. odd it seems the alcohol was higher when tasted from the keg. malty, with sweet and straw pinnings this beer was flavorful enough. lightly spiced from hops and malt more that adequate and good with my pizza....go mets.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 bonbright7 (179) - Bellport, New York, USA - SEP 10, 2008
Pre-release sample from BP. This light orange to gold beer looked great as we poured this into tasting glasses. This lightly spiced beer reminded me of a wheat or wiezen style as its slight sudsy head seemed to have milky texture. I found this very enjoyable to drink and I hope to see this on tap too.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bsm80 (144) - Massapequa, New York, USA - SEP 6, 2008
UPDATED: OCT 11, 2008 Amber pour, thin head, hints of grain and fruit, just enough hops for balance. An Oktoberfest I will be enjoying again.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Maverick34 (1413) - New York, USA - OCT 5, 2007
UPDATED: SEP 20, 2008 re-rate. For whatever reason I liked the bottled version way better than a nasty draft I had year. A passably good malty oktoberfest. One of the better blue points.
