COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blue Point Brewing’s "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard"

Another interesting all-you-can-drink growler from Rudolph of Buffalo. In a word, smoke. Intense forest fire Smokey aroma, intense smoke taste. Bit of retained lace and nice initial head. Peary like a scotch. Offset should be barbeque and you don’t need sauce.

Cask aged. A pleasant surprise and a change from the usual bourbon bombs these cask aged beers are. Aromas of apple, grapes, tannins, resin, and toffee. Taste a mix of brown sugary malt, caramel, and hints of peat and wood, balanced by a medium body. Light, cloudy yellow. Hops hit mostly in the middle and fade towards the end, leaving a cleansed palate, a solid finish, and a mild aftertaste of caramel. Very nice. Looking at the other ratings, it appears putting this stuff in a cask has mellowed it out positively.

Pours an amber hue with a halo of a head. Aromas of pine and pennies. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with flavors of aged hops with a nice bitterness, brown sugar, with a lingering finish.

This barley wine poours with an orange amber body with no head or lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and caramelly with a slight candy sugar note and a touch of alcohol. The flavor is sweet and caramelly with a slight hoppiness, a touch of candy sugar and a little alcohol. Full bodied, slightly dry and slightly warming.

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2004 More of an Olde Ale, but I’d guess that’s splitting hairs. Bronze colored, sparkly, almost translucent. Aroma is floral and carmelly sweet. It reminds me of Thirsty Dog's Bout Time Barleywine.. Cloying. Body is thick and syrupy. Sweet finish with enough hop bitterness to make it somewhat interesting. Thanks Santa(Indra)

Had at the brewery in Patchogue. 5-6 oz sample glass: Nice deep amber color with good head and head retention. Fairly hoppy and loaded with malt aromas. Some citrus noticed in the beginning then finishes off with some piney notes from the hops. Has a kick from the alcohol at the end. Very nice beer but Im sure glad I didtn buy the $17 bottle and held out to try it at the brewery.

Cask-conditioned at the Gingerman in NYC. Color of burnt umber with very little head. Aroma of alcohol and dark, dried fruit. Doesn’t hide the alcohol very well and is a little sweet for my taste.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2005 Original Rating (8-3-6-3-14=3.4): Strong raisin, plum aroma with hints of alcohol and bread-like yeast. Deep caramel brown with off-white, shy head that recedes to ring. Roastiness, sweet malts and fruity esters combine to give a charred dark fruit flavour. Alcohol is very apparent. Lasting roastiness in the finish. Bottle (sampled at Mondial 2004).
Rerate (6-3-6-3-12=3.0): Brown sugar and maple chocolate in the sweet, syruppy aroma. Hazy burnished copper coloured body is topped with a low white head that recedes to lasting cover with some minor lacing. Strong dark malt bitterness almost overwhelms the pearlike fruitiness and notes of chocolate in the flavour. Dry medium body with pointy carbonation. Bottle (2003 vintage) sampled at DenverLogan’s GABF 2005 wrap-up.

Rastacouere (6041) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 4, 2004
Amber body with off-white head. Intense aroma of malty sweet flavors that are not too well blended (honey, maple). Sweet smokey and light hops are hidden behind the massive malty alcohol. Very sweet palate, alcoholic and moderately astringent. Poorly balanced. A smooth medium body keeps it from being a waste. A poorman’s barleywine... that is very expensive..
