COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blue Point Brewing’s "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard"

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Bull Run (Thomasville Rd) - 22 oz bottle. Pours a slightly murky medium copper with a thin off-white colored head, bit of lacing. Faint trace of nuttiness, spruce and cherries in the aroma. Flavor has some heavy malty undertones, a nice dose of raisins and dates, a touch of citrus bitterness and some molasses in the back end. Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Good middle of the road Barley Wine.

From NOTES. A: Classic raisin/fig notes with a little chocolate milk and dried strawberries. Sounds odd, but they blend well and it’s actually a quite inviting smell. A: Reddish amber and cloudy, about one inch of head and good lacing. T: Very mild, almost watery, with subtle favors of caramel malt and bitter hops. Not much else, as all of the flavors really die on the finish and aftertaste. A little disappointing. P: Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. O: Decent, at best. Unremarkable.

22 oz. bomber poured into a snifter. Beautiful red amber with a smallish head that fades to lacing pretty quickly. The beer clings to the glass very slightly when swirled. Not a strong aroma, really. I get some caramel and vanilla. Maybe some raisins. Perhaps more than anything I smell alcohol, though. Malty start with some sweet toffee. Not a lot of complexity in the taste, but nothing to complain about. The finish is a strong hop bitterness. It starts off quite thin for such a big beer and such a malt profile. As it warms, it gets a bit more syrupy. Decent carbonation. Nothing bad, just nothing of note. Indistinguishable malt flavors and some hop bitterness.

Pours a nice clear amber with an average size off-white head. Aroma and flavour of smoke and hops. Alcohol is well blended, doesn’t taste too strong. Medium bodied.

Delicious, if maybe a bit on the sweet and simple side. Definite booze kick.

22 oz. bottle with at least 18 months age, thanks to Adrien. Aroma is candy sugar, fruit (not dark fruit) almost citrus, mild floral hints. Flavor shows a lasting bitterness that lingers well after the sip and has the citrus and floral notes that are indicated in the aroma. More on the hoppy bitter side rather than sweet/ dark fruit end of spectrum.
