Truly worthy its majestic name in fluid ounces, our Sour Cherry Imperial Stout is anything but sour. In fact, we have to make sure there’s plenty of it available for Valentine’s Day – after all, nothing says love like chocolates and a Sour Cherry Imperial Stout. This is an extremely complex version of the classic Russian beer style with plenty of roasted, black, and chocolate malts that delivers multi-layered coffee and sherry notes in a surprisingly smooth package. The beer is then matured with just a kiss of real sour red cherries. If you see Sour Cherry Imperial Stout on tap, give it a try – like true love, it’s sometimes hard to find.

On tap at Plan B - Glastonbury, CT. Aroma gives a distinct tart cherry aroma, with a solid stout base behind. Flavors are good and express a real clean fresh, tart pie cherry character, well married with the underlying stout. It’s a bit sweet, but the acidity fights that off a bit. I really appreciate the original quality to the cherry flavor. Nice fruit work and a good sipper.

On Draught, Clear brown, quite light for the style. Aromas of coffee, cherries and tobacco. Light body for the style. Coffee flavors, smoky and faint fruit. Overall very weak for the style.

Draft… Pours basically black with a small, creamy, khaki head that lasts pretty much throughout the session. I have a hard time getting a grip on the subtle aromatics, but am finally able to pull some chocolate crème and rumors of tobacco, light molasses and cola from the glass. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. The flavor is very roasty, quite sweet and fairly chocolaty with additional notations of charcoal and tobacco. Quite a bit of black malt bitterness to throw a semblance of balance into the mix, but this brew still leans sweet. Finishes bittersweet… with the bitterness lingering a bit longer than any other component. Drinks mainly like an imperial milk stout. In no facet of this beer did I pick up any cherry essence at all. Good, but not really ”as advertised.”

Draft at the brass tap. Pous a dark blackish color with a tan head with a dark chocolate, coffe and cherry aroma. The flavor profile agrees with the aroma, but a nice hint of sour cherries as the aftertaste.

Draft at Brass Tap. Pours a dark mohagany brown with sudsy tan head. Dark chocolate, cherry and pipe tobacco aroma. Flavor is disappointingly light with just a bit of sour cherry in the finish.

A - Pours a rich dark black color with a bit of red mixed in and a finger of frothy tan head atop. The head lingers around for a while before fading down to a frothy ring leaving behind a bit of lacing. S - Aroma is full of deep roasted malts and chocolate aromas. There is also some nice sour cherry aroma as well that gets stronger as the beer warms. T - Starts off with some sour cherry flavor and some roasted chocolate and malt flavor. Through the middle, some stronger sour flavor and some sweet caramel flavor comes through. The finish is a nice mix of sour cherry and chocolate flavor that lingers nicely. M - Medium-full bodied with moderate-low carbonation. The sour flavor works rather nicely with the rest of the flavors in the beer, especially as the beer finishes. D - Very drinkable. Would have liked the cherry flavor to hit just a bit heavier, but as it is it is nicely balanced with the chocolate and roasted flavors.

On draft at Coffee District. Dark jet oil black color with very little head. Aroma was strictly chocolate malts with a subtle hint of cherry. Flavor is malty and semi sweet with hints of dark chocolate. Wish there was a bit more cherry flavor but still a good drink.

This is a pretty interesting beer. There are plenty of fruit beers out there, but it’s tough to do them well, and you don’t usually see fruit imperial stouts. This beer poured almost pitch black with a bit of tan head. The aroma started pretty normal for an imperial stout, with roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee, but also had a distinct fruit/berry note with (unsurprisingly) a bit of sour cherry. The taste was fairly complex, starting off with light malt/caramel sweetness, then became fruity with a light tartness in the middle, and finished off with chocolate and a light bitterness. This is definitely not your typical imperial stout, and while it isn’t really sour and isn’t dominated by fruit, I actually liked it quite a bit. The sour cherry added some nice complexity to it, and I really enjoyed trying to pick out the different flavors as it evolved. I would definitely like to try this beer again (and preferably not as my 15th different beer of the night this time).
