COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Truly worthy its majestic name in fluid ounces, our Sour Cherry Imperial Stout is anything but sour. In fact, we have to make sure there’s plenty of it available for Valentine’s Day – after all, nothing says love like chocolates and a Sour Cherry Imperial Stout. This is an extremely complex version of the classic Russian beer style with plenty of roasted, black, and chocolate malts that delivers multi-layered coffee and sherry notes in a surprisingly smooth package. The beer is then matured with just a kiss of real sour red cherries. If you see Sour Cherry Imperial Stout on tap, give it a try – like true love, it’s sometimes hard to find.

Tap. Black with no head. The aroma was of roasted malt, grain, and light cherries. The taste was mainly bittersweet but very grainy. Light tart cherry notes throughout. Nothing special here.

clear dark brown, whispy brown head, nice lace, roasted aroma with light cherry character, creamy body, rich roasted and chocolate flavor balanced by some light cherry flavor and tartness, the roasted fades leaving a great interplay between the chocolate and the cherry

On tap... This beer had a strong coffee taste to it, it was strong, and very good.

At the brewery on tap. Pours dark black with a brown head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by coffee/chocolate. However, I didn’t notice any cherry taste.

Draft @ BP. Nice and roasty malts but the mouthfeel and body are on the thin side. There is an artificial cherry flavor that if natural would be some saving grace to this stuff. Not much in the head retention department either. The chocolate comes through in the finish though making it drinkable. Nothing to run out to find though.

On tap. I was disappointed that the cherry aspect wasn’t accentuated to what I expected but this is probably one of the best Blue Point offerings I’ve sampled with elements of roasted malts, some mahogany, chocolate and a nice creamy but elegant texture. Alcohol is well hidden.

Tap @ Blue Point Brewery, Patchogue, NY. Pours almost black with a nice off-white head. Smells like roasted malt with slight earthy notes and a hint of cherry at the end. The flavor is largely sweet in the front, with noticeable coffee notes and malt characteristics. I wish I’d tasted more cherry, but this was a good beer.

On tap, growler filled at Shoreline Beverage. Pours a very deep brown with a thin, sudsy, light tan head. The aroma is mostly roasted malt with some coffee notes and a hint of the cherries. The flavor is again dominated by roasted malt with some smoke and a touch of cherry sweetness. Some coffee bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied. A pretty good beer, although I think the strong roasted malt flavor masked some of the cherry.

This was a nice effort on a Imperial Stout. The cherries show a sweetness on the nose along with the choclate notes. The moutfeel really brings out the sweet cherris and the coffee of the stout. It has ncie balance with decent weight to it. Go sour cherries next time!

365 beers in 365 days! 7th beer in an attempt to rate 365 beers over the next year! Friday May 25th 2007 Draft in a pint glass from Max’s in Baltimore Pours a dark rich black color with a med-small light tan head. Sweet smells of dark roasted malts with a slightly fruity aroma to complement. The burnt smoky roasted taste is predominate upon first sipping, thinner body than other stouts with a quick to sharp sweet aftertaste that blends the sweet fruity taste along with roasted nut. Will be trying to go by season and style when possible, with special cellared ales on special occasions. Look for the next 358 beers and for the entire diary soon on my BeerMagnets website!
