COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Truly worthy its majestic name in fluid ounces, our Sour Cherry Imperial Stout is anything but sour. In fact, we have to make sure there’s plenty of it available for Valentine’s Day – after all, nothing says love like chocolates and a Sour Cherry Imperial Stout. This is an extremely complex version of the classic Russian beer style with plenty of roasted, black, and chocolate malts that delivers multi-layered coffee and sherry notes in a surprisingly smooth package. The beer is then matured with just a kiss of real sour red cherries. If you see Sour Cherry Imperial Stout on tap, give it a try – like true love, it’s sometimes hard to find.

on tap at CB Six, midtown NYC. blackish brown body, ruby-brown edges. thin creamy medium ruddy tan head. aroma of roasted malt, a little nutty, and faint cherry extract. flavor is roasted malt, a bit sour/dry/bitter but not hoppy. not really any cherry flavor at all. nice to have during happy hour with coworker friends, though!

Draft. A dark black with a smallish head. Tastes like beer with syrup added, and not good beer at that. Blue Point might be the most overrated brewery in the universe.

i dont know whether they used actual cherries or a cherry extract...but the blend of the stout characteristics with the cherries gave me a strong flavor of cough syrup. i barely want to drink that when im sick, let alone pay for it. i didnt even finish half of the beer.

Draft. Dark black with maroon hue in color. Limited head. Weak, mashed berry, cherry hints in aroma then run rough-shod over by the warm alcohol numbness that assaults the roof of the mouth. A milky, malty flavoring does everntually break through but too late to impress. Tasting leaves me with the impression of three very good things cobbled together in a clunky way.

Deep black coloured body, fully opaque colour with a thinnish light brown head. Aroma of nice fresh cherries, roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malt flavours throughout, tucked into a sweet and sour cherry flavour showing more nuts and raisins. Aftertaste has some subtle toffee and vanilla flavours, along with a very light oakyness. Overall, a good beer - I thought it was the best Blue Point beer to date! I sampled this beer on draught at Blind Tiger in New York, New York on 09-December-2007.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Lightly roasty, lightly lactic. No cherry at all in the flavor. Thin and lame, with weak maltiness. Seriously, where are the cherries? Where is the huge body, and rich, refined dark malts? This has nothing going for it at all. Time for a reworking of the recipe I’d say.

Tap at VSK event. Dark pour with a tan head. Oily looking on top. This drinks more like an imperial porter. I don’t really taste any of the cherries, at least no more so than you get dark fruit in some stouts/porters. Dry finish.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2007 On tap at Halftime. Pours opaque black with thin brown head that dissipated into brown bubbles along the outsides. SImple yet pleasing nose; coffee, sweet chocolates, maraschino cherries. Flavor is of roasted coffees and malts. Some chocolate carries through with a nice tart balance to the bitterness of an Imp. Stout. Unfortunately, the cherries are lost somewhere within this brew but they definitely altered its characteristics. Nice and thick mouth feel with a somewhat drying finish and warm alcohol presence. (Tried again following day, minor alterations to the rating)

Black with good, foamy tan head / Sweet coffee and malt nose / Full, malty body with good finish / Flavors of bittersweet chocolate and roast coffee with faint undertones of cherries / Try again.

Draft. This stout has a great balance of coffee, cocoa, and cherry flavor. The fruitiness of the cherry is an awesome accent to a full Imp. stout. It has a full, oily mouthfeel that finishes smooth and creamy with a warm alcohol presence.
