Truly worthy its majestic name in fluid ounces, our Sour Cherry Imperial Stout is anything but sour. In fact, we have to make sure there’s plenty of it available for Valentine’s Day – after all, nothing says love like chocolates and a Sour Cherry Imperial Stout. This is an extremely complex version of the classic Russian beer style with plenty of roasted, black, and chocolate malts that delivers multi-layered coffee and sherry notes in a surprisingly smooth package. The beer is then matured with just a kiss of real sour red cherries. If you see Sour Cherry Imperial Stout on tap, give it a try – like true love, it’s sometimes hard to find.

On Tap at the Blind Tiger Ale House NYC: almost black color with a tiny cream head on top. Nice sour - short kicking - cherry taste with a bit sour edge. Medium lasting. Nice one!

On tap at the Ginger Man. Pours black with a hint of red and a thin white head. Tart cherry aroma with hints of chocolate. tatse deviates from the aroma and is a huge thick bodied roasted grain, chocolate malt stout. slightly bitter and smooth with hints of the tart cherry, but really overpowering roasty stout. Awesome.

Poured an almost black color with a tan head. Aroma was nice sweet chocolate, some burntness to it, and sour cherries. Flavor had some nice sour cherry notes to it, but not overwhelming or extract like. deep roastedness and some sweet chocolate notes make up the rest of the surprisingly good stout.

Growler: This poured black in color with a moderate brown head that fades on the quick side. The nose gave off aromas of bitter chocolate, coffee and a sourness that had more of a lactic edge than cherry. In the mouth it was medium-bodied, with a round and supple midpalate that gave way to some bitter dryness on the finish that showed off bitter chocolate and coffee grounds. While this is not thick and syrupy like many imperial stouts, I don’t find much sourness or really any cherry in it. That said it was a smooth and somewhat typical imperial stout it just didn’t have an interesting edge like I assumed it would based on the title.

Draught at the Ginger Man, NYC. Murky dark brown beer, beige head, fine lacing. Nice sour cherry palate blends in well with a charcaol stout base.Nice, but not outstanding.

Now this stuff left an impression on me. $8 for a glass at Mad mex. I didn’t know what to expect here. I was thinking about something sour, what I got was a big strong glass of imperial stout with some manners. Not much aroma but I do sense a cherry in there or two. Initial taste is mostly roasted bitter chocolate, unique and almost enjoyable. Not bad. More personality than a sweet stout, but not much more. Cannot taste any cherry really but if you like the flavor of imp stout, give this a try. Hides the alky content really well, no wonder why the barmaid started to look tittlating at the end of the session. Never would have known this was +9%! I am a little disappointed that it is not cherry flavored but anywho.....A little more personality than a a lager lover would like. Finish is medium linger bitter.

Very Head looks alive, like a Guinness. Nice balanced carbonation. Flavor has some coffee, roasted malt, mild darker fruits, cocoa. Struggled to find the sour cherries. Good, well balanced stout.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2012 Rearte on 0/17/2012. The aroma is roasted malts at first, chocolate, ligh cherries. The cherries are there, but in the background. After a minute or so, the aroma of sour cherry, roasted coffee, chocloate come out. The appearance is a very attractive dark brown, with a reddish hue. The flavor is like the aroma: chocolatey, roasty, with a noticeable component of sour cherries. The plate leaves a pleasing sour cherry flavor (this is where the cherries are most noticeable). A little thin on the body for a stout, maybe just slightly thicker than medium. Very inventive, especially for Blue point. Very good stout overall.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a black color with a touch of purple/red at the edges and almost no head at all. The aroma was sour cherry, a touch of malt and a hint of molasses. The flavor was an intriguing mix of roasty malts and tangy cherry with a malty and sour middle and a long light cherry finish. Very interesting.

On tap at Bocktown. Blah. I wasn’t expecting much and this is right where I was expecting. Aroma was almost nil. Could pick up some slight cherry but not much. Pour was a nice enough deep dark brown with a red hue and a nice 1 finger tan head. Taste was like cherry cough syrup. Not very sour as the name suggests, just a little medicinal with just a hint of roasted malt. Not very carbonated and hard to drink.
