Draught, Abraxas. Reddish dark-brown with a thin head. The aroma is caramel and wood hop. Toasty, nutty with patent malt (I think) and lots of hop dryness. Coffee notes from that malt. Not bad but I could do with more hop brightness and more complexity.

Draft at abraxas. Black with half inch of thick rocky head. Bright, fun, inviting aroma! C-hop and syrupy malt the the background. Full bodied but the fear of chewiness evaporates on first sip. The lingering toasted black barley is really nice. Espresso bean but no bitterness. Straightforward and healthy. Wish it wasnt quite so strong, it feels like a siZpper but tastes like a quaffer. Got a nice balance.

3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
20 oz on draft into mug.minimal head very dark brown color almost entirely opaque. Some hoops coming off the too in the nose. Robust slightly sweet up front with a bit of biting hops, quick bite of pine in the aftertaste quickly overwhelmed by high-alcohol cloy. Good until the finish, but at least the hoops miner and clean the palette some.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at Chriso’s Fullers-Gales tasting, thanks to Leighton. It pours very dark brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is treacle, pine, resin and sweet caramel. The taste is pine, resin, treacle, charcoal, liquorice, cola and roasted malt, with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A decent black IPA.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Draught at Churchkey. Deep brown pour with a small bubbly head. Nose and flavor hold touches of soapy hop, light roasted malt, a bit of strange dark fruit presence, and a milky mouthfeel that doesn’t fit with the style. Not impressed.

from le Mondial de la Bière 2011, Strasbourg - pours a very dark brown beer under a solid and creamy long lasting beige foam; toasted malty aroma; slightly biscuity and with a solid flowery hoppiness; full-bodied and slightly tart; a bit soapy and with a solid bitterness, dry and bitter soapy finish, flowery and biscuity - disappointing

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a bit of a cola glow at the bottom and a thinnish, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, caramel, toffee, light grassy hops and some good coffee. Medium-bodied; Assertive hoppy flavour at first dies fairly quickly and shows a lot of malt, some good caramel and sweetness but also a little nutty and earthy quality at the end. Aftertaste shows a great complex flavour with the roasted malt coming together quite nicely with the caramelised sugars and the earthy and herbal hops. Overall, a nice Black IPA with more of the focus on sugars and roasted malt - but it works out well without a ton of hops! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 20-November-2011 for US$3.75 sampled at home in Washington an hour before heading back up to New York on 26-February-2012.
