Not a CDA in my book. Very roasted and coffee porter without the required hit of hop bitterness. Also pours more brown in color. Like the charity angle but SOS is better.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a nice medium sized offwhite head, good retention and lace. Almost black in color, nice ruby edging. Nose is faint roast, pine and light chocolatey notes, hint of smoke. Body is basically medium, lightly oily, tame carbonation. Light chocolate flavors backed with pine and roast, grain, raspy. Dry finish, light roast and hop, mild bitterness. Not nearly toxic, but itll do. Bomber procured from Statelineliquors.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught @ Cambridge House: This one poured a fairly opaque black color. The was a small amount of a tan head on it that left a bit of lacing. This has a nice nose to it. Lots of piney hops, with some grassiness, chocolate and roastiness to it also. The taste is also very good. Piney, chocolate, grassiness. Not quite as bitter as I would expect for an IPA, but still a fair amount of bite. Definitely worth checking out!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at Joe’s ridiculous going away party tasting. Pours a murky brown with a thin beige head. Big and malty. Sticky hops all over. Murky and malty. Nothing crazy going on, but still decent enough.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz bottle, purchased at 7-11 in Bayport right down the road from the Blue Point Brewery. Jet black appearance with minimal tan head, almost no light passes through. Aroma is tremendous, very nice and hoppy but with a touch of sweetness and maybe a little spicyness. Not like other IPAs that have a bitter, over-the-top hoppy aroma. Taste is bitter but a little sweet malt flavor kicks in especially when enjoyed at room temperature. Palate is good and full, rough as an IPA should be. Good option from Blue Point.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz bottle, extra from Speedway, thanks Jim! Beer #2 leading to Darkness. Ripped open with a nice hiss, Black IPA’s have been growing on me since the re-release of SSR from stone. Black as night pour decent off white head. Smoky as all hell, but in control. Not overwhelmingly bittler, but a solid balanced beer from entry to finish. Not my favorite, but could I drink this again, yes. My favorite so far from the brewery.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
(trade from NYBeer) 22oz. bottle. Pours a nice frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. While this may look like a stout, the aroma leaves know doubt that it’s an IPA! Definitely hop character in the flavor, but it’s not of fresh hops, which is something I’m used to seeing with the Left Coast IPAs. Probably has something to do with the black roasted malts added to change the color to black. Light body. Lots of bitterness lingering on the palate in the aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Have sampled two bottles of this, both purchased locally, 2 weeks apart.
Appearance is a very dark brown, with ample creamy tan head. Good retention and lacing for the dark/roasted malts it contains.
Aroma is citrus hops up front and then coffee. Taste mirrors the aroma, as it is hops up front with a coffee/chocolate dry stout finish. Very unique due to the combination of malts and hops - unlike other IPAs, more akin to a hoppy stout.
Creamy, moderate viscosity mouthfeel - would have preferred a touch lighter given the profile of flavors.
I had a second bottle after enjoying the first, and had it after sampling Stone’s Sublimely Self-righteous Ale. I got much more hop flavor and aroma from the sludge than from the SSRA, which to me was purely stout-like.
Since this is a limited production run, I will be looking to corner the market on this one, as it is still unique and remains more available than other Black IPAs.
