Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Not a big fan of black IPAs and this one might be bottom of the barrel. I would most likely pass on this one next time.

On tap at Bocktown Robinson. Nice black IPA. Nothing spectacular. Aroma was decent. Roasted malt with a green hoppy undertone. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was a little weak, but not bad. Roasted bitter malt with no sweetness doubles with the green leafy hop flavor. Light carbonation and a short wet finish.

$2.80 can from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours dark brown with a large beige head. I expected this to be more "sludge" like. Smells of pine and grapefruit. tastes of pine, grapefruit, cold coffee, soap, some spice... leftover stale coffee.

16 ounce can before softball, poured a dark brown color with aromas of coffee grounds, and light citrusy hops. Flavors are the same, earth, light coffee, and citrusy hops, nice beer overall.

Shiny red/brown with dimpled tan head. Aroma is an herby hop liqueur. Taste is pretty muted, and underdelivers based on aroma and name. Carbonation seems a bit low. $3/16oz

Had to buy this a) for the name and b) because I love black IPAs. Comes out of the can a slightly hazy sepia with a thick, fluffy, persistent khaki head that leaves substantial lacing. Roast malt aroma has a strong woody hop overtone and hints of caramel and chocolate. Flavor is quite hoppy but not bitter, with notes of semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and roast malt. Texture is on the thin side, and not too fizzy, but that is a minor downer. Drinking beer for a good cause - does it get any better?

16oz can from udbeernut. Thanks! Pours a clear dark brown almost black. Aroma of coffee with a little citrus. Taste is medium bitter. Roasty coffee and chocolate with herbal and grassy hops. Im really digging this beer. Pretty sure i could drink this everyday.

Pint can: Aroma is big hops up front with spicy grapefruit note to it. Pours a clear blackish/ amber with a very thick off white head that lingers. Taste has got a nice hop texture with the candied texture I don’t like in some hops. Some light malt texture with some caramel malt notes. Palate is medium to high carbonation with a lingering hop note in the aftertaste. Overall, Pretty good. Cheers!

16oz can poured into a pint glass. Opaque dark brown with a big airy head. Dark cocoa aroma, roasted malts, piney hops and faint vanilla notes. Dry roasty flavors, med-hi bitterness, dark chocolate, and resinous hops. Med-full body, long finish, could be a bit smoother, but overall not bad at all.

Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a black color with caramel highlights and a huge foamy brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was malty, toasty, malted milk and floral hops. The flavor was bitter, roasty and almost sour with cocoa, malt, anise, floral hops and that terrible old McDonalds coffee that always reminded me of rancid battery acid. Medium length bitter old school McDonalds coffee, anise and floral hops. Not good.
