COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer thatís big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BPís 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their ďSpreading Our WingsĒ campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles Ė you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge ďSave the BuffleheadsĒ Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Draft at Slows Bar B Q. Pours near pitch black with a small foamy head that quickly fades. Aroma is light roasted coffee, chocolate, grapefruit, and grassy hops. Tastes decent, nice mix of coffee, chocolate and grapefruit hops. Kinda thin a little watery though. The flavors are not as fresh as they should be. Overall, an ok Black IPA.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks DSG. Black, opaque, with a sturdy cream-coloured head. Hop, some coffee and then more coffee in the nose, bitter, coffee and dryness in the mouth. Medium-to-full body, carbonated with coffee finish.

16oz can. Pours a deep brown-black color with a finger of off white head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, piney/grassy hops, and a touch of toffee and chocolate. Taste of carmel malt, grassy hops, brown sugar, and slight chocolate/coffee. Also had a weird funky wine like/nail polish remover taste.

Can shared at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Slightly transparent dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of piney hops, "green" notes and some roastiness. Bitter favor with hops, piney and a bit citric, some roastiness and a bit of coffee. Medium-bodied. Decent.

On tap. Pours an opaque black with a dense foamy coffe colored head. Bright aroma of hops, coffee notes. Very full body, slight carbonation makes for broad & smooth feel. Wonderfully balanced initial salty mellows to sweet with a smooth finish. Really nice take on an IPA.

Tall boy can thanks to UDBeernut. Creamy and chocolate. Lots of carbonation out of the can. Hoppy but without the intense hop aroma of some Black IPAs. Nice.

I poured a 16oz can into a goblet. I believe there was a Julian date of 11/15/12 on it but Iím not sure (which would make it about four and a half months old).

Appearance: Opaque black in the glass, though itís brown coming out of the can. Forms a large, fluffy, white, frothy head which retains and laces extremely well.

Smell: Slight earthy note with a hint of flowers or other clean scent, though muted overall.

Taste: The black IPA is meant to be a hybrid of the stout and India Pale Ale style, but lately it seems every brewery is making a standard IPA and throwing in dark malt just for coloring. Thatís how I feel about Blue Point Toxic Sludge since it tastes like a traditional American IPA but is lacking the roasty quality that should be found in a true black IPA. Not that itís a bad beer, in fact itís pretty good for what it is, but more couldíve been accomplished.

Begins with a prominent, slightly sharp, somewhat dry bitterness. It doesnít change or develop much throughout the swig. Itís not in the typical citrus or pine hop flavor, but rather the sheer bitterness. Blue Pointís website says itís only 40 IBUs, but it seems a little stronger than that. A hint of pine or resin on the back end with mild coffee or dark chocolate flavors in the aftertaste. Itís a rather simple palette to be sure, but the taste thatís here is pretty good. Unbalanced yes, but not cloying or gimmicky in any way. Just a solid, standard Black IPA.

Drinkability: Blue Point Toxic Sludge is an ideal Black IPA for beginners or those not appreciative of overly hoppy beers. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, but never intense. Thereís a creamy, smooth texture to it which makes it easy to quaff or sip and savor. At 7% ABV itís right where it should be - big enough to be a truly bold beer, but light enough to not be anything obese or intimidating. An ideal brew to pair with a hearty meal.
