Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aromas of roasted malts and grapefruit. Flavor is slightly sweet with notes of grapefruit, roasted malts and a touch of chocolate. Not a great Black IPA but decent.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
(trade from NYBeer) 22oz. bottle. Pours a nice frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. While this may look like a stout, the aroma leaves know doubt that it’s an IPA! Definitely hop character in the flavor, but it’s not of fresh hops, which is something I’m used to seeing with the Left Coast IPAs. Probably has something to do with the black roasted malts added to change the color to black. Light body. Lots of bitterness lingering on the palate in the aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black beer with a white head. Aromas of fresh, clean hops, and black licorice. Taste of chocolate is stronger than one might think. Bittersweet herbal hops mix with tastes of black licorice, mild coffee, and dark chocolate. The chocolate dominates the hops in this one, but it works. Dry finish. Tasty stuff.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
16oz canned November 15, 2012. Served at around 45F.
Pours dark brown to black in the glass with red highlights, surprisingly light-colored head for a dark brew, off-white to a very light beige, 3 fingers, very rocky/foamy, lasts forever.
Aroma is kind of mild, lemony citrus, pine, caramel, bread, light roasted malt. As it warms up, it gets better, better strength, more roasted malt notes.
Flavor is pine and citrus hops, lemony, mild roasted malts, mild chocolate & coffee, mild sweetness, good bitterness, mild alcohol. THEN it warms up and gets a lot better. Citrus, pine, dark, rich roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, caramel.
Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied, good to sharp carbonation.
A hoppy Guinness? Light in body and light in the roasted malt flavor. Gets a LOT better as it warms up, Good to Very Good Black IPA. Not the greatest out there (Sublimely, Dubhe, etc), but in the ballpark of something like 21st Amendment’s Back in Black.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Just a bit off of being a really good black IPA. Nice citrus hops mixed with chocolate flavors. Nice lingering flavor. A little bit weak up front.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap @ Tap Room 307 with Erica. Black pour with an oatmeal head that has almost no bubbles and very good retention with opaque, windshield-frost lacing. Aroma is light roasted hops. Palate is dark and a tad roasty but not overwhelmingly so. Pretty balanced and not incredibly dry for the style. Erica is a sexy, sexy marshmallow.

Not a big fan of black IPAs and this one might be bottom of the barrel. I would most likely pass on this one next time.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft @ Eli Cannon’s, Middletown, CT. Served in a pint glass, this brew has a dark brown, almost black body with a fizzling brown head that laces nicely throughout the pint. This medium bodied Black IPA has a strong, but not abrasive, pine flavor from the hops and a pleasant toasted nut flavor from the roasted malts. Not too heavy and also well balanced, this beer also leaves a numbing, almost menthol like effect after each sip. Personally, this is one of my favorite Blue Points brews I’ve tried.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
16oz can poured into a pint glass.
Opaque dark brown with a big airy head.
Dark cocoa aroma, roasted malts, piney hops and faint vanilla notes.
Dry roasty flavors, med-hi bitterness, dark chocolate, and resinous hops.
Med-full body, long finish, could be a bit smoother, but overall not bad at all.
