COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

The hops have faded somewhat, yet the shwartzbier, roasted black beer aroma and flavour remain. And so I get a somewhat citrus integrated shwartz. Good aroma, good colour and off-white head and lace. Very drinkable. Pleasant, below average as a straight out black ipa.Can from FlandersNed in Warren. Middling mouthfeel.

Deep brown-black pour with a very light dank hop aroma. Lots of cocoa and black roasted malt. Chewy and roasty with a heavy dank hoppiness. Assertively hopped with a nice clean bitterness and some roasted malt character. Chewy and a little bit earthy. It’s quite fragrant with some lingering bitterness. Pretty solid.

Pint can from Capone’s and State Line. Pours chestnut toward black colored with 1-finger tan head. Nose is choc malt, resiny hops, cacao. Tastes piney hoppy, with the hops taking the forefront, and a cacao and black patent malt flavor at mid-palate. In fact, the hops get dominant late, which is OK because the malt balances them out well. This one is very good.

Clear dark brown color, creamy light brown head. Roasted, malty, coffee, citrus taste. Citrus and bitter aftertaste. Moussy mouthfeel, pretty high bitterness. Citrus and roasted scent.

Can. Great smell, tropical fruits and some sweetness. The flavor is bland and mediocre though. It is a brownish beer, not really black either.

On cask at Blind Tiger. Pours with a thick black body and tan head that slowly fades. Aromas are bready, malty, chocolate, caramel, roast. Hop aromas are spicy and citrusy. Clean yeast wise. Flavors show a nice balance. Ashy, bitter, roasty bitterness with some hop bitterness, malty and bready. Very dry on the roast notes. Hop notes are of mild, generic citrusy hops and some pine. Light esters and fruit towards the finish. Creamy cask mouthfeel. Well conditioned with a nice mild carbonation, medium bodied.

Bottle at Chriso’s Fullers-Gales tasting, thanks to Leighton. It pours very dark brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is treacle, pine, resin and sweet caramel. The taste is pine, resin, treacle, charcoal, liquorice, cola and roasted malt, with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A decent black IPA.

Pours a mostly opaque with a well-lacing clingy off-white head. Has a fresh resiny piny hop nose with some light caramel sweetness underneath. Starts with pretty good fullness and a nice light toasty maltiness with some nutty character and good fresh grapefruity hop flavor before a crisp bittersweet finish. A well-balanced and drinkable black IPA.

Pours dark mahogany with full mocha head and some sheet lacing. The aroma is full and rich and inviting with notes of citrus hops mixing with pin hop resin, some chocolate, sweet toffee candy and a thin layer of dark roasted malts. The taste is rich with dark roasted malts running into a firm layer of pine hop bitterness as well as citrus hops around the edges. By midway the malt sweetened citrus surges forward just in front of lingering pine hop resin and dark roasted malts. Man. I can drink this all the time. Yum.

16oz can from Perfect Pour. Shared with Steph. Can says "Extremely fresh"... Lol where is the date? Put your money where your mouth is, BP. Kind of clear dark brown red color. Made hazy with lots of fine particles in the body. Thin khaki head. Some bits of lace, mostly loose. Medium to bigger body. Reasonably smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Aroma and flavor is a little disappointing. It’s a black IPA, yeah, but it tastes kind of like a black IPA that a macrobrewer made. Like a leinenkugels black IPA or something. Very mild and mild-mannered. Kind of sweet, too. Moderate sweet taste, light on the bitterness. Some chocolate malt, toasty malt, nutty malt, and earthy hop. Light bit of pine. Tastes like a hoppier but basic brown ale, basically. Light bit of metallic. This is my friend Steph’s first time trying a black IPA... She likes it, but her only input is that "it tastes a little watered down". And that is fucking spot on! This is like a decent black IPA sat around for a bit, got a little malty and sweet, and then was watered down a bit. OK "black IPA", I suppose. I like the style so I may be a bit forgiving. But "Toxic Sludge" seems like a misnomer. I asked Steph what’d she’d score this (never asked her that before). She said 2.7, which I’m pretty impressed by. Because 3 is close to average, she says. Nice.
