COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Tallahassee, Fl - Proof Bar - on tap - Pitch black pour, sticky mocha colored head. Fresh, fragrant aroma with some heavy spruce and a hint of mint. Flavor has heavy citrus bitter, hoppy grapefruit notes with a bit of underlying caramel and a touch of oatmeal. Mouthfeel is thick and rich and not too tongue numbing. Pretty decent overall.

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2012 Sampled at RBBSG. Nice dark red color, small beige head. Smell malts, pine, resin, spruce, grapefruit. Taste malts, resin, lightly roasty, pine, spruce, nicely bitter. Medium carbo, medium body.

notalush (4208) - Denver, Colorado, USA - DEC 21, 2010
Pours a fizzy dark brown - kind of looks like cola - nose of black malt, roast, chocolate and underlying green hoppiness - moderate carbonation in the mouth - starts with moderate chocolate and a fairly strong roasty character, tasting a bit like black coffee - a bit of caramelized sugar and char - strong hoppiness arrives through the middle and lasts long into the finish - the bitterness compliments the roast at first, but becomes astringent by the finish - a moderate acidity develops that amplifies this - decent, but startst to fall apart at the end.

Pours deep black with nice big lacing off white head. Aroma includes notes of grass, pine, touch of metal, some biscuit. Taste is big pine and resinous hops up front, touch of citrus leading into caramel and biscuit, finishing punishingly bitter with a touch of roast. Very good black IPA, roast and hops meld well together.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2011 Thanks to djrn for sending me this bottle. The beer pours a medium brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is heavy on the roasted malt and chocolate. The beer smells more like a porter than a Black IPA because I don’t get any hops in the nose. There are definitely hops in the flavor. In addition to the chocolate and roasted malt, I get quite a bit of pine-flavored hops. Low bitterness. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A good beer for a good cause.

Can. The aroma is very toasted with a bit of coffee and pine hops. The appearance is brown with a large tan head. The taste is super hoppy with some roasted malt but no balance. The palate is thin. Overall not quite toxic sludge but not easy to drink either.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a bit of a cola glow at the bottom and a thinnish, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, caramel, toffee, light grassy hops and some good coffee. Medium-bodied; Assertive hoppy flavour at first dies fairly quickly and shows a lot of malt, some good caramel and sweetness but also a little nutty and earthy quality at the end. Aftertaste shows a great complex flavour with the roasted malt coming together quite nicely with the caramelised sugars and the earthy and herbal hops. Overall, a nice Black IPA with more of the focus on sugars and roasted malt - but it works out well without a ton of hops! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 20-November-2011 for US$3.75 sampled at home in Washington an hour before heading back up to New York on 26-February-2012.

Can shared at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Slightly transparent dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of piney hops, "green" notes and some roastiness. Bitter favor with hops, piney and a bit citric, some roastiness and a bit of coffee. Medium-bodied. Decent.

Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. Nice dark (and yes, sludgy) pour, with a thick fluffy head. Sweet toasted malts in the aroma, with deep chocolate. Mouthfeel is thick, a bit oily, with a long dry finish. Taste has a bunch more coffee in it than the nose promised. While I do love coffee brews, it’s not exactly the ticket in a black IPA in some sense, as it tends to cut in on the hop/malt dance underway.

16oz can. Medium brown color, light tan foam. Aroma of pine & citrus hops. Tastes of toasted malts. Sharp bitter hops. Finishes with a pine resin bite & citrus oil bitterness. Huge lacing. Overall, not what I was expecting from a Black IPA. Nice hop. Color was bit of a throw-off. Medium bodied. (3611)
