COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Draught, Abraxas. Reddish dark-brown with a thin head. The aroma is caramel and wood hop. Toasty, nutty with patent malt (I think) and lots of hop dryness. Coffee notes from that malt. Not bad but I could do with more hop brightness and more complexity.

(trade from NYBeer) 22oz. bottle. Pours a nice frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. While this may look like a stout, the aroma leaves know doubt that it’s an IPA! Definitely hop character in the flavor, but it’s not of fresh hops, which is something I’m used to seeing with the Left Coast IPAs. Probably has something to do with the black roasted malts added to change the color to black. Light body. Lots of bitterness lingering on the palate in the aftertaste.

Bottle. Near pitch black pour with a short, foamy tan head. Floral and citrus hops atop roasted malt, soft pine and burnt caramel. Taste is big citrus fruit, roasted malt, pine, sweet malt, dark chocolate notes in the background and burnt caramel. Body is medium with a soft creamy carbonation and a mild, lingering hop bitterness. Ends with more citrus notes, pine resins, roasted malt, burnt caramel, dark chocolate and floral hops.

Dark brown, huge and foamy tan head. Slightly toasty malt, a bit of toast, then a nice hops finish that is more smooth than punchy.

My can [473ml] shared with HogTownHarry & biegaman. Pours a deep orange-brown with an average size semi-lasting frothy tan head. Aroma of leafy hops, toasted malt and notes of coffee and chocolate. Flavour of toasted malt and leafy hops. Average to medium bodied. Not great, but pretty good.

Good solid brew from the blue point gang. Pours dark, tastes light. Good character, palate is slightly thin. Not the best black ipa, stone stone still holds that honor. In fact this isn’t blue point’s best ipa, hoptical illusion still holds that honor. This beer is definitely worth a try.

beerbill (3044) - Laurel, New York, USA - OCT 1, 2010
22 oz. bottle. Pours cola color with a moderate tan head that lasted through three-quarters of the glass and left medium lace. Pleasant aroma of grassy hops, light pine, and some mild malt. The flavor is lightly roasted malt followed by a mild-moderate bite of hops bitterness that lingers briefly after the swallow. Medium bodied. A bit spritzy on the palate. No problems, but a little underwhelming.
