3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz. bottle. Pours cola color with a moderate tan head that lasted through three-quarters of the glass and left medium lace. Pleasant aroma of grassy hops, light pine, and some mild malt. The flavor is lightly roasted malt followed by a mild-moderate bite of hops bitterness that lingers briefly after the swallow. Medium bodied. A bit spritzy on the palate. No problems, but a little underwhelming.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
(trade from NYBeer) 22oz. bottle. Pours a nice frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. While this may look like a stout, the aroma leaves know doubt that it’s an IPA! Definitely hop character in the flavor, but it’s not of fresh hops, which is something I’m used to seeing with the Left Coast IPAs. Probably has something to do with the black roasted malts added to change the color to black. Light body. Lots of bitterness lingering on the palate in the aftertaste.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. Nice dark (and yes, sludgy) pour, with a thick fluffy head. Sweet toasted malts in the aroma, with deep chocolate. Mouthfeel is thick, a bit oily, with a long dry finish. Taste has a bunch more coffee in it than the nose promised. While I do love coffee brews, it’s not exactly the ticket in a black IPA in some sense, as it tends to cut in on the hop/malt dance underway.

Bottle. Poured into a DFH tulip glass a dark cola-like brown color with a flufy 2 finger head that slowly settles, leaving sticking lace as it goes down. Vanilla and caramel in the nose with a very slight hoppy character aroma. Medium mouthfeel. Sweet start with a mix of roast and caramel that then transitions to a hop bitterness that lingers on. I love the fact that this beer is for a good cause but as a beer it is really not that memorable. The hop characteristic is pretty laid back and takes a back seat to the roastedness.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber from Liquor Loft. Brown pour with a red tint and large fluffy tan head. Aroma is a little sugary, toast and molasses. Taste is sharp bitter and flowers. Slight metallic vibe in finish. Chalky palate with sharp carbonation. Interesting but harsh.

10th anniversary for Blue Point, says the bottle cap. It has been a great decade for American beer. I am not a huge Blue Point fan, but I couldn’t resist buying something called Toxic Sludge. I like the concept too - some of the money you spend goes to protect birds. Dark brown pour with a burgeoning, bubbly crown. This is a dry, herby, astringent IPA. Hopefully it is not really toxic. It is not that sludgey either. This made me think of a new term - coffee IPA - not sure that has been used before. The hops reminded me of some German styles. It did grow on me some as I sipped, but it is not really an amazing IPA.
