COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Pours a mostly opaque with a well-lacing clingy off-white head. Has a fresh resiny piny hop nose with some light caramel sweetness underneath. Starts with pretty good fullness and a nice light toasty maltiness with some nutty character and good fresh grapefruity hop flavor before a crisp bittersweet finish. A well-balanced and drinkable black IPA.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2011 Thanks to djrn for sending me this bottle. The beer pours a medium brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is heavy on the roasted malt and chocolate. The beer smells more like a porter than a Black IPA because I don’t get any hops in the nose. There are definitely hops in the flavor. In addition to the chocolate and roasted malt, I get quite a bit of pine-flavored hops. Low bitterness. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A good beer for a good cause.

Deep brown-black pour with a very light dank hop aroma. Lots of cocoa and black roasted malt. Chewy and roasty with a heavy dank hoppiness. Assertively hopped with a nice clean bitterness and some roasted malt character. Chewy and a little bit earthy. It’s quite fragrant with some lingering bitterness. Pretty solid.

A - Pours a deep black color with just a touch of brown with a finger of off-white head. The retention on the head was okay and there was some nice lacing left behind. S - Heavy amount of sweet roasted malt and some nice piney/grassy hops. Touch of toffee and chocolate elements are also blended in. T - Starts off with some sweet roasted carmel malt flavor with hints of grassy hop in the background. Also a bit of sweet brown sugar. Slight bitterness. Through the middle the hops gain some power and there is some very nice bitterness. The finish has a lot of flavors going on including some black licorice, chocolate/coffee taste, and some hop bitterness. M - Medium bodied with moderate to moderate-low amount of carbonation. Smooth and just a bit creamy. Slight dry finish. D - Very drinkable. There is a nice balance here of malt and hop. There is a slight alcohol presence, but nothing that gets in the way of the beer. Overall very smooth and crisp.

Pours a dark cola color with an off-white head. Aroma of hops, pine, and some roasted malt. Good roasted malt flavor with some toffee present and a fine hop finish. Light body, but no flavor is sacrificed. This is a very good beer.

In short: A well done Black IPA with a woody and tobacco character. Good beer
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed approximately one month after purchase (so probably fresh). Bottle from j12601, thanks a lot Jay
The look: Clear very dark burgundy topped by a medium beige head with good rentention
In long: The fun hoppy nose is halfway between citrusy and tobacco leafs over a fresh coffee beans. Taste has fresh coffee beans, medium roastiness, wood coal, caramel, dry tree branches, a lot of fresh tobacco leafs, some black liquorice, citrus fruits (mainly bitter grapefruits), some dust, some cacao. After taste adds surprising refreshing tropical fruits in the comeback. Bitterness level is medium. Mild tartness. Some astringency. This is a fine Black IPA that manages to be somewhat refreshing, something that most Black IPAs aren’t. This beer is Blue Point jumping in the Black IPA bandwagon. Blue Point isn’t cool and hip. If Blue Point was cool and hip it would jump in a Black IPA Prius.
