Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Pours a dark cola color with an off-white head. Aroma of hops, pine, and some roasted malt. Good roasted malt flavor with some toffee present and a fine hop finish. Light body, but no flavor is sacrificed. This is a very good beer.

In short: A well done Black IPA with a woody and tobacco character. Good beer
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed approximately one month after purchase (so probably fresh). Bottle from j12601, thanks a lot Jay
The look: Clear very dark burgundy topped by a medium beige head with good rentention
In long: The fun hoppy nose is halfway between citrusy and tobacco leafs over a fresh coffee beans. Taste has fresh coffee beans, medium roastiness, wood coal, caramel, dry tree branches, a lot of fresh tobacco leafs, some black liquorice, citrus fruits (mainly bitter grapefruits), some dust, some cacao. After taste adds surprising refreshing tropical fruits in the comeback. Bitterness level is medium. Mild tartness. Some astringency. This is a fine Black IPA that manages to be somewhat refreshing, something that most Black IPAs aren’t. This beer is Blue Point jumping in the Black IPA bandwagon. Blue Point isn’t cool and hip. If Blue Point was cool and hip it would jump in a Black IPA Prius.

Draft @ Eli Cannon’s, Middletown, CT. Served in a pint glass, this brew has a dark brown, almost black body with a fizzling brown head that laces nicely throughout the pint. This medium bodied Black IPA has a strong, but not abrasive, pine flavor from the hops and a pleasant toasted nut flavor from the roasted malts. Not too heavy and also well balanced, this beer also leaves a numbing, almost menthol like effect after each sip. Personally, this is one of my favorite Blue Points brews I’ve tried.

The black IPA pours dark chestnut black with a huge creamy light tan head. With three months on the bottle it lost some hops, but there was some there left with some light sweetness. It tastes great with creamy light roasty malts that settle with pure subtle but bitter hops.

Tallahassee, Fl - Proof Bar - on tap - Pitch black pour, sticky mocha colored head. Fresh, fragrant aroma with some heavy spruce and a hint of mint. Flavor has heavy citrus bitter, hoppy grapefruit notes with a bit of underlying caramel and a touch of oatmeal. Mouthfeel is thick and rich and not too tongue numbing. Pretty decent overall.

As expected this is very black with a tan head. The head left very nice lacing. Roasty malt nose. Big full palate, rich roasty flavor. Malt is nice and balanced. Roast lingers but it’s not overpowering. Very satisfying on all fronts.

Nice black IPA. Good thick malt and a high hop flavor that kicks pretty hard. Nice and chewy and enjoyable.

This poured a very dark brown color with a smaller beige head. Aroma was lots if citrus and herbal hops, and medium roasted malt. Flavor was hops forward, the roastedness give it some balance from being a straigh ipa. I really like the hop profile in this one.

Bottle shared by ryandevilhorns at my beer tasting. Black pour with brown head. This was hoppy and roasty with a nice smooth finish. Pretty good black IPA.

Draft at abraxas. Black with half inch of thick rocky head. Bright, fun, inviting aroma! C-hop and syrupy malt the the background. Full bodied but the fear of chewiness evaporates on first sip. The lingering toasted black barley is really nice. Espresso bean but no bitterness. Straightforward and healthy. Wish it wasnt quite so strong, it feels like a siZpper but tastes like a quaffer. Got a nice balance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
