beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Dec 20, 2007 Brightly dark ruby brown color that is brilliantly bold to view through. Capping is smallish and creamy tight of a light sandy tan hue. Keeps a firm skim present the whole consumption period. Packed in spotty lacing is stitched across the glass with good sticking power.
Aroma is soft of cocoa powdered fluff with a bit of whole grain breadyness thats a titch on the sweetened doughy side.
Taste is firm and round of some soft brown bread dough sweetness, some cocoa hints, perhaps a drip of maple. Semi soft and drying hoppy finish that’s fresh and green with a hint of grass and grain.
Feel is about medium with fairly solid tone and firm carbonation that keeps a nice tight tang and smallish bite of action adding to the overall flavors.
A nice drinking Winter ale (Red/Brown ale) thats soft, firm, and just tasty enough. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA Dec 13, 2007 On tap at HDG. Reddish brow with a sturdy tan head. Flavor is nutty and a tad sweet on the malty side. A pretty standard version of the style but I prefer it a bit hoppier. BREWMUSKCLES (1062), New Jersey, USA Dec 8, 2007 this is an unpretentious winter beer as it is basically an interesting amber with a quality hop and malt character. first a crystally hop and modestly pine taste introduces itself. this is followed by an equally modest and mildly sweet malt character that has a spicy peppery/licorice quality that in keeping with its nature is modest. altogeather i like the result and find it refreshing, yet intricately complex enough for satisfaction.i like that too much attention was not placed in overspicing or sweetening. and that -cheap beer - carbonation -something like a sodapop - is somewhat endearing. kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 30, 2007 12 oz bottle, via goldtwins. Pours a dark copper body with a one finger plus foamy beige head. Moderate carbonation and some light lacing. Nose is toasted and slightly sweet crystal malt with just a light accent of hops. Maybe a touch of oxidation. Slightly sweet and slightly grainy malty flavor with a moderate bitterness coming on in the finish. Seems a little dull, I suppose that this is last winter’s ale? Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly husky feel and active fizzy prickly carbonation. Overall, not the best realy, but maybe it could be because of age. It just seemed a little muted. Quite an unusual choice of style for a Winter Ale though. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 29, 2007 Updated: Dec 6, 2007Amber with good, foamy beige head / Sweet malty, toffee nose / Medium, creamy body with good finish / Moderately sweet flavors of burnt sugar with undertones of semisweet chocolate / A fuller bodied amber with sweet, syrupy character. kevin62 (267), New Jersey, USA Nov 24, 2007 12 oz.bottle-Poured a dark reddish-brown with a small head.Aromas were of caramel and chocolate and malt. The flavors were also all of the items listed above, with some mild spice as well.I thought this brew was pretty good. Chapel (329), Levittown, New York, USA Nov 17, 2007 Copper body with a bit of foamy head. Aroma was light chocolate. Somewhat malty but not overly so. There wasn’t much of a finish so much as an end. Flavor didn’t really last. Would benefit by simply being more flavorful. beastiefan2k (1590), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA Nov 1, 2007 Finally rating this thing, have had it a few times and never enjoyed it enough, however this time it was different. Sampled at brewery where it poured with a foamy head and a dark brown body. It’s too dark to see through. The beer is caramel and spritz-y with sweet, chewy malts. The taste however is interrupted halfway through with seltzer and mineral flavors. Not a negative actual, stops the beer from getting cloying. Still I have often had this tasting much worse (and probably will later re-rate to a lower rating) but this was nice. A few possible reasons for this: drank at the brewery (and not a contract brewed version); it’s really fresh; or I was in a really good mood (or possibly a combination of these factors.
