3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jumpjet2k (314) - Houston, USA - JUL 6, 2009
Draft at the brewpub. Light amber in color with a wispy thin white head. It was hard to get much aroma out of the serving glass, but I got a small note of sweet malt and some alcohol. Flavor was caramelly, sweet, and malty, pretty standard for a barleywine. Not a whole lot of hops in this one. Ho hum. Don’t make a special trip for it or anything...

I smelled hops at first but after a few sips, the caramel smell is more prevalent. Red-orange color. White head. Lingering taste on the back of the tongue. Taste is on the bitter side, more hoppy, but still a nice overall flavor. Slighty creamy.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear, amber-gold colored body with a finger-width, creamy, beige, head that dissipates slowly and leaves a good amount of creamy lacing. Aroma is sweeter caramels with some butterscotch and raisin-dark fruits. Some maple syrup sweetness, dates, and orange citrus pines. Flavor is similar. Lots of creamy, sweeter caramels and toffee up front with a good amount of dark fruits. Hops balance nicely though and present themselves more in the flavor than aroma. Oranges and pines with a bit of an earth as the hops dry this out with a moderate bitterness while leaving a balanced caramel sweetness. Just a light alcohol warmth before leaving a lengthy aftertaste following a very creamy, fuller body and a soft, light-moderate carbonation. Overall, an enjoyable barleywine. Not the most complex, but flavorful with a nice balance between the big malt backing and solid hop presence.

On tap at the brewpub in San Antonio.
Pours a clear golden apricot amber orange color with light golden amber orange hues when held to a light source and a frothy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring.
Sweet malty aroma that isn’t very leathery with a very prominent earthy hop presence and a touch of alcohol sweetness. Hints of pine needle and citrus fruit. Not the traditional aroma expected from a strong ale/barleywine but it’s still nice and hoppy.
Medium bodied with a sweet caramel malt presence, a touch of alcohol warmth and a prominent dry earthy hop character. It does have some nice earthy pine hop flavor expected from an American Strog Ale/BW but none of the strong overpowering heat and leathery malt flavor. Decently balanced and pretty easy to drink. One of the better offerings I had at Blue Star.
