COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is a tribute to Australia’s 19th century ale brewing pioneers and also recognizes the Hunter’s traditional love for dark beers. A deliciously drinkable, rich, malty, dark ale of classic proportions, this beer is full of chocolaty roasted characteristics; hints of caramel candy, and light fruity notes from the ale yeast. This is balanced with medium bitterness derived from both early and late hopping.

On tap in the Brewery garden in the Hunter Valley. Pours brown with an ivory colored head. Has a sweet malt aroma. Slightly raisin-like, but only slight. Benign smoke flavor, but definitely roasted. Flavor has a unique pear-like taste.

Being sold now under the name Resort Premium Black Ale. Draught. Reddish dark brown with white head. No aroma. Light body with medium carbonation. Dark malt flavour with reasonable bitter finish. A reasonable dark beer.

On tap at the brewery’s pub. I ordered a sampler of their products minus the ginger beer of which they were out of. So I opted to have a second glass of the black. I was quite unimpressed with their products, and a decision was needed as to what brew I would get for the return of the wooden "paddle" glassholder. I opted for the black over the pilsner, which I though was the 2nd best of the sorry lot. Everything was slight with this brew. An initial smoky flavour disappeared just as I want more of it, and so too the nuttiness. it looked good in the glass, and went down ok, but all in all it was a slightly underwhielming experience.

On tap at the Blue Tongue "brewery", Hunter Valley: Black to brown at the edges with a lasting beige head. Faint roasty aromas and tangy citrus. Standard dark larger taste: Initial carbonic and hop tang, followed by some weak roastyness. Things get better mid palate with some nutty flavours emerging but it falls down again at the end. There is nothing here really, and I wonder why they bother. Where is the Hunter Valley in this? Where is the quality? Where is the care, or the love? Poor stuff.

on tap at the brewery in newcastle, alas replacing the far-superior newcastle old. deep brown colour with a quickly diminishing head. some stone fruit and molasses in the aroma. some nasty chemical and rotten flavours, not very pleasant
