COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Altbier, literally translated as “Old Style” beer, is a classic German ale. BBC Altbier is brewed with additions of Munich, wheat, caramel, and chocolate malts creating a delicate, but flavorful malt profile. This delicious amber colored session beer is balanced with additions of tradtional spicy German hops creating a light and floral bouquet to compliment its complex malt profile.

I have no idea how I end up getting a beer with only 5 ratings in the Beer of the Month club, but sure enough... BBC Amber Ale, German Style Altbier. And it’s pretty tasty too. Not great, but you almost never get great beer in this club. Quite good.

Bought a half barrel because the distributor was out of my regular. It helped that this was only $83 a half barrel (was this a closeout price?) . It was a bit cloudy which worried me (some beers are supposed to be cloudy, but it can indicate spoilage). It had the bite that I want in an ale though it could have more hops for my taste. The taste is sufficiently rich, and the aftertaste is good. It is a far better beer than American commercial beers (duh). IF this price is normal, I will definitely purchase another 1/2 barrel. I would not if over $120.

12 ounce bottle from Vintage Cellar. Pours a clear dark amber color with a medium head. Decent head retention and lacing. Nutty and grainy aroma with a light tart note. Taste is pretty much the same with a bit of caramel and leafy hops as well. Thin bodied.

Bottle from Market Street Wine Shop Downtown Charlottesville. Pours an orange brown with minimal head. Sweet aroma of caramel, corn and tea. Grainy, grassy taste with a touch of sweetness. Drinkable.

Pours a clear amber color with off white head, bit of a chill haze in my pour. Caramel malt aroma, bready as well. Flavor is more of the same with slight hop bite at the end.Light and crisp. Nothing special

Clear amber pour, low head, no lace. Sour corny aroma. Corny metallic taste, nicely carbed though. A little bit of nutty flavor. Pretty gross all the way around. Yuck.

Bottle. Not a very special beer, but better than mass market. Bit of a nutty flavor, not over the top. I probably won’t return to this one.

no idea if i’m rating this right. the bottle says bluegrass brewing co. (BBC) amber ale... german style altbier. there is no BBC amber ale, though except the amber waves. so i assume it’s th altbier. it pours a dark rust color. with plentiful head. smells like malt extract. tastes like feet and the floor of a sauna where you place your feet. there’s a fair amount of water in it. i’d say >99%. nothing altiber about it. it’s times like these when i think nick was right when he decided not to rate all the shit-fuck beers like this that have no distinct purpose. well, i guess i’ll qualify that. there is a purpose. if the lay man in lexington goes to some bar and orders this, that’s a victory for microbeer. we cant expect everyone to jump to the levels of drinking/spending that we enjoy. so kudos to that guy, and insofar as my example demonstrats, kudos to the beer. but once that guy drinks more beer and grows a palate, fuck this beer.

12 oz bottle purchased from Woody’s in Cool Springs. Poured a clear amber color with a two finger off white head. The aroma was strong with caramel. The flavor was caramel, with a sour fruit finish. This was a decent, drinkable beer, but needed a little more to be something good.
