COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Altbier, literally translated as “Old Style” beer, is a classic German ale. BBC Altbier is brewed with additions of Munich, wheat, caramel, and chocolate malts creating a delicate, but flavorful malt profile. This delicious amber colored session beer is balanced with additions of tradtional spicy German hops creating a light and floral bouquet to compliment its complex malt profile.

Red/orange color with medium sized off white head. Aroma is malty, slightly sweet, notes of honey and pear, with a faint note of sweet german hops. Flavor is malty, slightly sweet, clean, a bit spicey, with a mildly bitter finish.

Bottle. Clear shining copper hue. Crisp on the tongue, malty, fresh tasting, but lacking a depth of flavor... has some light malt and corn flavors, but really light, and I almost want to say that it’s close to flavorless at times. Has some biscuit malts in the nose, and a bit of a butter presence in there as well. Lightly toasty, not nearly enough of a crisp toast aroma that I enjoy from altbier. Very drinkable, but lacking complexity. When altbier is made properly, it is close to my favorite beer to drink... but this one and other US-made examples I’ve had have been disappointing.

Bottle from Squire’s. Dark straw pour with nose of grainy pale malt, hopcitrus. Tastes of wheaties, hopcitrus, some lemongrassy herbal notes. A bit watery but not bad.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep hazy amber. Lightly metallic aroma with malt and minerals. The flavor is simple with light malt, hints of caramel, and minerals/metal. I don’t bring up the minerals and metal as a bad thing, it’s just the flavor. It’s not particularly “off”. The body is medium and has a clean mouth feel for the most part. Pretty easy drinking really.

On tap at BBC in the Cincy airport. Poured a nice shade of lighter amber with a well-retained eggshell head. The aroma was sweet with toasted barley and caramel malts leading the way.. the faintest hint of smoked peat laced through there was very enjoyable. The flavor had toasty caramel at the core with dry, scratchy, earthy bitterness surrounding (a hint of floral too).. finished kind of sharp as it lost its balance. Light-medium bodied with very active carbonation on the palate and a spicier finish.. OK feel.

A very refrshing alt. Great malty flavor that is well-balanced with the hops. Not an outstanding beer, but a very good one. And, this one will have a very broad appeal - even to those accustomed to Bud, etc.

bottle - Pours amber with a one finger lingering head that laces nicely. The aroma is caramel malt and maybe a touch of spice. It tastes sweet and malty with some mild hops in the background. It’s another pretty average craft beer.

Pours a deep amber with a one finger head from a 12 oz. bottle. Aroma is malty and grainy. Taste grainy and roasted as well. Worth trying but not the best from BBC.

Rated 1/24/06: Solid amber ale brewed in the old style. Pours a good looking light amber with ample head. Decent aroma of sweet malts countered by a bit or rye. Smooth and easy, very drinkable. Good flavor, a nice ale that could get you through the night.

tiger-eyed amber, clear. head like a backyard dog: responds when aggitated, then slumbers. unusual aroma of musty vintage books and a restrained pear-like compote. fairly nice tasting, drier than the nose suggests, smooth, reminiscent of some of the better, heartier english ales. hops make a mild impression, then alas, that crystal kentucky water asserts itself a bit too much right at the end. generally good, tho.
