I am a little stunned to say that Bluegrass has made a bourbon barrel aged beer (or large format beer in general) which did not turn out to be a total disaster. This is actually a relatively solid beer in which the aging complements rather than distracts from the underlying base. That said it was a little on the expensive side for the result. These small batch series are probably a pass from now on.
Aroma / Appearance - Coppery red and sparkling the bubbly ochre head was full of carbonation. However there was no urinal sized yeast cake in the bottom of this one - always a plus. Sweet apple rests on top of a light bourbon texture with a combination of vanilla and candy sugar to make things more interesting.
Flavor / Palate - The bourbon, vanilla, and cotton candy flavors that hit the senses take a while to play out. Soon enough though a boozy taste clings to the back of the throat with sweetness. Coming from Bluegrass this is actually a great beer. Even so it is average at best.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 phaleslu (3534) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - NOV 9, 2010
750 ml bottle from West Lakeview Liquors, where they had 3 BBC guys in the house and a table full of BBC brews. I opened this at dinner after the event. Pours a clear amber color with a small eggshell white head. Notes of raisins, caramel malts, toffee, booze, some Belgian yeast notes, and brown sugar. Very sweet and malty. The barrel notes sort of blend in with all the other sweetness, but some bourbon character comes through. Medium-bodied, with a malty mouthfeel and low carbonation. Muddled but still good.
