COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bluegrass Brewing Company has brewed a winter warming coffee stout using a Heine Brothers’ organic, fair trade coffee grown in Chiapas, Mexico. It will be available for purchase at Bluegrass Brewing Company on Friday, February 9th while supplies last. “I just tasted the stout - it has a wonderful balance between coffee and stout flavors,” said Bluegrass Brewing Company head brewer, Jerry Gnagy. Heine Brothers’ co-owner Mike Mays and head coffee roaster Todd Stanis collaborated with Gnagy to choose the Mexican coffee and give it a medium roast and a coarse grind to best bring out the flavor. “This Mexican coffee has a medium body and an almost chocolatey finish that will hold up well in such a hearty beer,” said Stanis. “Should be a perfect match.” This oatmeal stout is brewed with English roasted barley and caramunich malt which gives a roasty and slightly sweet malt flavor. The addition of flaked oats lends creaminess and body to this pitch black ale. The coffee will be added to the hot wort (unfermented beer) after boiling. This will extract good flavor without adding bitterness or burnt flavors. Freshly brewed coffee will also be added to the beer after fermentation is completed and the beer is ready to be served. This will give the freshest coffee flavor and aroma. (previously 6.5 % ABV)

Growler thanks to tectactoe for sharing. Dark brown pour with no head. Aroma is just packed with espresso beans and just a hint of vanilla. Tastes like cold coffee. Very little sweetness or bitterness. Thin body and a tad watery. Enjoyable to drink but could use some body and complexity.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2014 Growler: Black, inky with only a very slim, dark brown trim at the very edges. Not much head, super thin khaki ring. Smells like cold pressed, iced coffee. Serious. Slightly roasted coffee beans, light creamy sweetness underneath. Like your morning iced coffee. Taste is very similar with a light undertone of acridness & a touch of prune. Very slight. Otherwise it’s all cold coffee, all day. Coffee beans, light creaminess, hint of roast. Thin body with a semi-roasted coffee mouth coating. Very, very small hint of smokiness, too.

Draft. Smoked malt, coffee, and chocolate aroma. Chestnut brown with small head. Smoky malt and coffee/dark chocolate flavor. Nice body. Very nice - especially liked the smokiness.

That commercial description is… rather old. Jerry Gnagy? It’s been awhile! Aroma: Coffee with some vanilla bean presence, light cocoa, light acidity. Appearance: Jet black with a bubbly mocha head. Flavor: Coffee-centric throughout; light cocoa and vanilla about the same level as nose. Palate: Light body, slick texture, flat carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: Still fairly solid, but seemingly not at the level it once was.

Bomber poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, cocoa and light cola. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of roastiness, coffee and bakers cocoa with a smooth lingering cocoa finish.

Opaque black - brown beer. Good tan head. Semi dry palate. Rich coffee - espresso. Mild minerals. Semi dry finish. Nice coffee but really needs something else - a bit more malt perhaps?

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, light molasses, and mild roasted coffee. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights and and a minimal beige head. The flavor starts with a quick dose of chocolate. There’s a touch of fruit in the middle. The finish has mild roasted coffee and a hint of vanilla. It’s light-medium bodied with mild carbonation.

Pours mostly black with some deep red hues at the edges, strong light brown head, big bubbles indicate low carbonation. Aroma is deep freshly roasted coffee, super earthy, roasted malt. Taste is rich coffee, chocolate, hint of green hops, molasses, very roasted. Body is full and dense, very low carbonation, bitter coffee finish. Overall, very good. Definetly the best I’ve had from BBC so far.

Thanks to drfabulous for this one in trade. Pours a dark stout brown with a tan head. Nose is roasted malts, earth, black coffee, and hints of dark chocolate. Flavor is similar- earth and black coffee up front, dark chocolate mid and slightly sweet coffee in the finish. Medium in body and pretty good coffee stout overall.

750 ml bottle. Coffee is the dominating aroma and flavor. there is a nice creamy texture and flavor. The roasted malts are there and highlight the coffee. A nice smooth coffee stout.
