Thaichile (597), 10aFly, New Jersey, USA Jun 10, 2007 Bottle. Pours an orange hued amber with a thin head. Nose is very malt laden with citrus pine notes recessed. This was quite malty, making it unusual for the style. I didn’t find this overwhelmingly bitter, however, it was noticeably present. Although this was the lowest ranked beer in our IIPA tasting according to Ratebeer, it was selected as #2 of 6. Went well the cheeses also.
allfreej (291), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottled. Murky orange pour, tan head. Nose is malty, heavy, caramel, hop resin, pine, orange, butterscotch, toffee, maple syrup. Medium body, alcohol notes, mild carbonation. Heavy bitter finish. A good double IPA, but not a great double IPA. lb4lb (1388), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 3, 2008 Bottle shared by mmm///beer. Thanks man!
Pours a warm caramel color with a light beige head. Smell is nice and sweet with rich, creamy caramel and light hops. Taste is more hoppy and earthy than the smell would indicate with some drying hoppiness and less malt than expected as well. Still some sticky caramel flavor in the background. A nice, and different DIPA, I thought. mmm///beer (546), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 28, 2008 25.4 oz bottle (751mL) poured into tulip- poured a darken copper color, light carbonation, one finger high head very faint amber in color formed and stayed for a little bit. Aroma of pine, floral hops, and citrus. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt tastes very slightly roasted which makes it just that much more enjoyable, no sweetness can be noted, hops come in the middle and linger after each swallow. Alcohol has warming effect, but still hidden well enough not to notice- it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb. Everything is in balance- you have to love the label, and you have to love this brew too! Lowe1983 (742), Fairborn, Ohio, USA Jul 19, 2008 Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is pretty malty with caramel malts. Citrus hops are present but don’t come out too much with some alcohol as well in the background. Flavor is caramel malts at first. Finishes bitter with citrus hops and some warming but not what I expected. Merrill (22), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 12, 2008 Cloudy copperwith light off-white head. Sweet, fruity. Rich, but rough hop pile on the tongue. Almost barly-wine like malt density, but only a tasty 10% alcohol. I’ll buy this again, to add variety. The finish is an unexpected sour note that seems rather incongruous.
