On tap at Snaps steakhouse. Pour is dense black with no head. Aroma is fairily non complex of roast, smoke, wood, some kind of sweet malt and sour whiskey. Taste is full of sweet wood and sour malt. No hop flavor, alcohol evident. An okay bourbon barrel stout but leaves some to be desired.

7/13/10. Vintage 2008 bottle we found sitting around work. Black pour, not completely opaque. Mild chocolate and coffee aroma - a surprising lack of bourbon, even for its age. The flavor is much the same - a sour kick, coffee, and a smooth chocolate finish - but no bourbon whatsoever. A huge meh.

Bottle at the Horse and Barrel in Lexington... $7.75/bottle... damn. Pours pretty much black with a slowly forming beige head. Nose is roasty and grainy with notes of the oak more than the bourbon. Not as much vanilla or sour hints as expected, though it is pretty sweet. Some burnt coffee notes as well. Surprisingly thin for the alcohol content. Okay, but that’s about it. Still a little bummed I paid so much when I could have had more Pappy Van Winkle 12 yr for the same price. Mmmmm.... bourbon...

Rich aromas of coffee, chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and effervescent, but the aromas carry into the nice blend of tastes that glide across my palate. Satisfying, and glad my lady picked up this four-pack on her last trip to Nashville.

A-pours a nearly opaque black color that lets a little red hue through on the edges, the head is pretty tight and fizzy lingering for a little, khaki colored, with a nice lace left on the side of the glass. S-the nose has lots of rich dark chocolate, very decadent, a nice oak presence with a faint touch of bourbon from the barrel. Roasted malts and a touch of nuttiness to it in the back. T-roasted maltiness with a lot of rich dark chocolate, very creamy and decadent chocolate. a solid oak presence and a hint more bourbon than the nose but still light enough to not detract from the flavor. The back has a touch of nuttiness and a faint note of some slightly burnt coffee. M-this is a little thin, medium bodied and very smooth and creamy on the palate. well carbonated to give it a good crisp finish. its just too thin. D-very tasty brew and quite subtle showing no signs of the larger abv. the body really detracts from the quality but the flavors are pretty tasty, a little one dimensional, all roasted maltiness but the rich chocolate actually gives it notes of sweetness.

Draught. Black and thin with light brown head. Aroma is bourbon, burnt, and chocolate. Flavor is similar with light bitter, vanilla but very crisp for stout.

12oz bottle. Opaque brown-black with a beige head that thickly laces the sides of the glasses, but is oily and patchy as well. Chocolate licorice aroma, nice and mellow. Rather mellow and drinkable for the ABV, mild carbonation..maybe aged a little too long in the closet. Smooth chocolate tones, a touch woody. The bourbon notes are there, but quite mild and subdued. An excellent sipping beer, deep and flavorful, but retains an easy drinkability. Pretty classy, non-standard, which earns it extra points in my book.

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2010 Pitch black with brown head that quickly disappears. Aroma is dark sweet bready malt and whisky, flavor is thick chewy caramel, light coffee, and an alcoholic sting that is nice and not too sharp. Bottle from Maryland Farms Wine and Spirits, Nashville, TN.

From 12 oz bottle. Aroma roast, bourbon, vanilla, malt, caramel. Appears near-opaque black; light brown head. Flavor is roastier than the aroma lets on; bourbon; a little smoke (?). Super-silky body; nice. Just enough bourbon flavor (less than Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale) lets this beer really shine. Excellent.

Bottle. Pours very dark with a small beige head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, a little fruit and bourbon. Bourbon dominates the flavor, plus some chocolate, coffee, and a slightly odd salty flavor -- maybe sort of soy sauce? Interesting, but I probably don’t need to try it again.
