MrBunn (951), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 19, 2008 Bottle. Pour is a dark brown color (looks kind of thin) with a bit of a tan head and aromas of charcoal, peat and stale coffee. Flavor is fairly intriguing and develops nicely. Starts out with a bit of a dark chocolate/coffee flavor that then gives way to a smokey/peat flavor and finally ends with a bit of a whisky barrel finish. The thinness that I picked up on in the appearance is one of the liabilities of this beer... it has quite a bit of flavor and some rather nice transitions, but it could probably stand a thicker malt presence to help smooth it out a bit. Falls pretty far short what I would call an "Imperial Stout," but is still nice and highly drinkable.
JaBier (84), Capital City, Ohio, USA Nov 29, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours black with an off-white head. Aroma is smoky and sweet with some coffee. Flavor has a little bit of coffee and bourbon, but is overpowered by a smoky tanginess. In all honesty, reminded me more of barbecue sauce than beer. Naven (743), San Diego, California, USA Nov 21, 2008 Bottle from Jimbo. Lively, and I mean lively carbonation. Aroma is roasted malts and coffee. Flavor is similar, although I really don’t get much bourbon, or oak for that matter. The beer itself is fine, it’s just that something is clearly missing. A little more time in the barrels probably would have done wonders for this one. But, what do I know. doubleo (966), San Diego, California, USA Oct 18, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours thin lookin g dark brown, no head. Smells dark and roasty malty with some wood and booze, slightly sour. Tastes roasty malty with some dry, semi-sweet wood flavors and some booze. Again, slightly sour malts. Not bad, not great. Medium body, good carbonation. Silphium (2050), Lansing, Michigan, USA Oct 17, 2008 On tap at Bound’ry in Nashville. Deep opaque brown body, thin dense tan head. Bourbony nose with prevalent roasted malts. Unusual body, with heavy emphasis on dusty, toasted oak and vanilla, like old, dry cabinetry. Surprisingly thin and one-dimensional beneath the barrel flavors, predominantly roasted malts and chocolate notes. Lacks complexity. That said, the relatively low ABV results in a pleasantly soft sip. drfabulous (803), Columbia, Missouri, USA Oct 15, 2008 On tap at the spot across from the Brown Hotel. Lots of vanilla. A lot of vanilla. But beyond that taste which comes from the bourbon, of course, the stout lacks body and overall taste.
