UPDATED: APR 10, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Kevin, my main supplier of Bluegrass beers. Pours black with a beautiful off white head. Cola like carbonation in appearance. Nice coffee and dark roasted malt aroma. Medium bodied mouthfeel, which is sort of nice. The malt flavor is more a robust porter than an impy, with chocolate, coffee, and molassess notes. The bourbon barrel characterstics were very subdued in this sample, but in a good way. It gave it a wisp of vanilla and oak, with none of the hotness and smokiness of bourbon. Very easy to drink and alcohol is well hidden. I am sure Impy purists will knock this in future ratings, but I am not a purist. Just a beer enthusiast who does not reserve the good ratings only for "huge" beers. This is a good beer. Those who can’t stand overpowering bourbon flavors may want to give this one a try. 1-25-07. Tried a different batch a year later. Not as good. Too much dry woodiness and mulch flavors. I would drop the overall down to 14. But the original rating stands.

A very dark almost black pour with a slight dark tan head. An aroma of bourbon. A flavor of roasted malt and bourbon. The alcohol taste and aroma starts to ease out of it more as it warms. A smooth easy mouthfeel with light carbonation.

Pretty unique stout with chocolate, vanilla, and strong bourbon aroma. Very light carbonation and the palate is a bit thin. Nice flavor of coffee chocolate though, and it hides the alcohol very well. Thoroughly enjoyable.

[2291-20090626] 12floz bottle. Musty cellar and dank wood aroma. Dark brown black body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head. Smoky woody roasted malt flavour has a long sweet fruity finish. Medium-full body. Very drinkable and quite tasty.

Had it on tap at Mellow Mushroom, Charlottesville. I enjoyed it, but i think that is was dominated by the bourbon flavor; would have liked stout flavor. A little thin on the body, but besides these complaints still really enjoyed this.

Pours thick, pure black, like used engine oil. The bourbon aroma is fairy strong on this one, with a chocolate kick. Flavor has very strong coffee notes, with a little bourbon thrown in on the side. Malty alcohol and bourbon aftertaste.

A delcious stout if there ever was one. The aroma is to die for. It smells strongly of dark chocolate, coffee, espresso, and malt. The flavor isn’t as strong as the aroma would lead you to believe, it’s much smoother, but still very malty, smooth, and chocolatey. There is only a hint of bourbon flavor, the smoothness caused by the barrel aging is the most dominant feature. This is worth a try by anyone who enjoys dark beers.

Poured into glass with little head, nice tight off white head. Little to no lacing. Aroma is strongly of an earthy brewed coffee. Taste is mid-palate of bourbon with a mild boubon heat as swallowed but carries a beautiful burnt oaken aftertaste. The body is moderately rich. A beautiful beer that would pair well with a number of food items, especially red meats.

12 oz. Bottle acquired in trade with Acknud. Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights. Small tan head with lacing that stays till the end. Nose is of coffee, molasses, and a slight hint og bourbon. Mouthfeel is a little dry for an Impy. Flavor was same as nose with the taste of coffee and molasses. Some hints of boubon, but not strong. Finish is dry with no bitterness. A good brew and excellent trade item.
