shigadeyo (1342), Southwest Ohio Area, Ohio, USA Jul 13, 2006 Updated: Dec 20, 2006 Aroma is moderately roasty with a bit of cocoa. Beer is a very dark brown with an off white head that disapates pretty quickly. Flavor is slightly bitter sweet. Not very much wood or bourbon flavor, but overall pretty smooth, but slightly watery. The 10.5% is almost undetectable except for a little in the finish. I was a bit disappointed for a Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, but the beer is definitely worth trying.
Sampled again on 11/29/2006 at the November meeting of the Junedale Beer Klub. Brought by Kovu... Tasting notes: Pours a murky very dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma and flavor are like chocolate milk with some roastiness to it. Dry finish. Light to medium body. Bottled 4/06. Original rating (6|4|6|3|12) remains unchanged...
Heathen (464), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jul 22, 2008 THOUGHTS: I feel a little sorry for the people of Kentucky if this is how they make one of the better styles of beer. There was really more coffee than bourbon. A fairly nice beer, but an awful imperial stout. Hid alcohol incredibly well. Once again great beer, awful imperial stout.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a nearly opaque, dark brown with a small tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma was nice but weak. It was moderate mild coffee and a little vanilla. It basically tasted like coffee, cream and sugar. The initial flavor was moderate to heavily sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was light to moderately sweet, lightly bitter and slightly sour with a short to average duration. There was not a ton of flavor. It basically tasted like a coffee with cream, sugar and some sweet stout. The medium to full body was syrupy with fizzy carbonation and a light astringent finish. Dorwart (1593), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Jul 20, 2008 Thin head which dissipates quickly. Thin sheen of foam around the edges of the glass. Roasty aroma with lots of milk chocolate, butter, charred wood and some sweet malts. Color is a very dark brown with a touch of red. Rather light body for a stout. Loads of roasted grains, some bitter coffee, ash, light bourbon persence. Although the flavor is there, it is lacking in intensity. Late smokeyness. Hides its alcohol pretty well. Finishes roasty and rather bitter. A decent impy but in a class below most. derekbang (83), Indiana, USA Jul 5, 2008 Very disappointing bourbon barrel stout. I struggle to really call this a stout - palate was more like a porter. Very thin with a somewhat bubbly, frothy head (which didn’t seem right). The bourbon flavoring was extremely mild - after having other bourbon stouts like the Goose Island, I was expecting much more bourbon flavoring. Would not likely drink again. gwelch925 (29), Northern, Kentucky, USA Jun 28, 2008 Bottle. Was just as dark as all the other stouts that I have had ,but no where near as thick. When I poured this brew I saw no signs of head manifesting. As expected, flavors of chocolate and bourbon were present with some tones of oak and tobacco. Aromas of bourbon and roasted malts. LiebeBier (734), RIchmond, Virginia, USA Jun 27, 2008 Draft - While this beer does an amazing job at masking the alcohol content of the beer, it’s also lax in complexity of flavor. A very fine beer, but not the mouthfeel of a Rasputin or Storm King.
