COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Historically a meade was made to celebrate the union of a couple and given to them for celebration of their marriage. Truly defined as a braggot, BBC Luna De Miel is a fermented honey ale flavored with a blend of raspberries and blackberries. Luna De Miel is a refreshing change from standard BBC offerings. Luna De Miel is effervescent, fruity, and light, yet warming from its moderate strength. BBC Luna De Miel is offered in a wine glass.

750ml from Liquor Barn, Hurstborne, Louisville. Cracked this sucker on New Year’s Eve at a block party and found it to be less fearsomely sugary than I’d feared. Clearish red/brown pour, like long-stewed and pulped fruits added to the mead. Minimal carbonation but the body’s got some substance and some lightness on the palate (hints of stickiness too). Honey is there in the taste for sure, but it’s balanced by the tarter end of the raspberry spectrum and it gives the brew an enjoyable vinous quality as well. A modest surprise.

Redder than a baboons but. Sour raspberry and tarty. Dry sour raspberry flatness clean and smooth. Smooth carbonation. Very nice.

Clear dark peach with a thin pink head that dissolves into a very thin layer. Sweet aroma of raspberries and blackberries to go with plenty of honey and some malt. Taste is fruity and sweet, almost candied at times. Honey, raspberry, blackberry make up most of the taste bill with a bit of malt sprinkled in. Effervescent body with a mildly dry finish that’s full of honey and fruit. Drinkable.

Bottle. Pours a dark pink with a thin white head. Aroma is fruity and tart. I get citrus notes, along with the berry notes that no doubt come with this meade. The palate is light, but very dry. The flavor is very sweet and a little tart. I am not a big fan of meads, but this one is not bad.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2011 On tap at the Bluegrass Brewing Company on fourth street in downtown Louisville. Pours a hazy deep red in a wine goblet. No head, nice lacing, and good carbonation (effervecent). Aroma is dry Raspberry and taste is honey, raspberry, with a hint of blackberry that finishes really dry.

750 ml bottle from the St. Matthews location of BBC. I just had Apis Poltorak Jadwiga at Dark Lord Day, and it’s the first mead I’ve ever had, so it probably isn’t fair to every other one I try. Pours a reddish-brownish-gold color that’s hard to describe with a pink-tinted head. Notes of honey, raspberries, grapes, and syrup. Medium-bodied, with fairly low carbonation and a sweet, sticky mouthfeel not unlike a carbonated winel. That said, this wasn’t nearly as syrupy, sweet, or low carbonated as the APJ. Nice change of pace during our massive tasting.

Nice color and appearance. Served in a wine glass at BBC Shelbyville. Pink with small head. Aroma of faint raspberries. Effervescent in the mouth. Taste is honey sweet without the heavy hit of raspberries I expected.

750 ml bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a dark pink/reddish color with about an inch cola-like carbonated light pink head. Head retention is good, with a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is raspberries, honey, and red wine. For some reason the aroma reminds me of drinking some Boone’s Farm stuff, I’m not sure if that’s a good sign or not. Taste is similar to the aroma, but it’s more sweet than it is wine-like, although the wine taste is still noticable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit slick and syrupy. The carbonation is very strong at first, but it does smooth out as the beer warms. Drinkability is decent, a smaller glass of this at BBC wouldn’t be bad, but a 750 ml bottle of this is a bit too much for me. I thought this was a decent brew, it’s the first Braggot I’ve tried and I would try one again. I’ll have to get this on tap the next time I go to BBC.

Aroma of light honey and raspberry. Appearance is reddish gold with barely any head. Flavor matches the nose. Palate is slightly lively and bubbly. A refreshing mead, but nothing too impressive.

GTMW. Lightly sweet raspberry and honey aroma. Not too sweet or dry, this was a middle ground for mead. a nice find, very drinkable.
