Brigadier (887), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA May 6, 2006 25 oz bottle - thanks Kevin!
When I first opened this, it became a huge gusher. First merely foam than a dirty chunk of yeast and then for at least ten more minutes nothing but white foam. Finally, after it subsided I poured some into my glass to discover even more foam - it was at least two-thirds foam and only one-third liquid. The aroma was quite pleasant with a mixture of bananas, spices, damp spring barnyard and cherries. It seemed promising until I took a sip and was assaulted by the yeast. The huge yeast cake must have broken up a bit because there was considerable sediment despite a careful pour. When my senses returned I was able to start detecting other flavors, primarily cherries and a peppery spice. Initially bitter, it soon become sour and then evolved to have a slightly sweet character. Overall a little bit of a disappointment. Perhaps when I visit the brewpub in Saint Matthews I will try this again to see how it compares on tap (sans sediment and yeast cake).
General_Gao (2509), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Aug 21, 2008 750ml bottle. Poured a hazy medium orange color. The head consisted of a few sorry looking medium sized soap bubbles that popped immediately. Smelled of apple cider with a splash of grape and a good whiff of alcohol. There was also a hint of candi sugar. Medium bodied with carbonation on the low end of the spectrum. Sweet and spicy (clove and cinnamon) with a bit of bitterness at the end. The alcohol and fruit flavor gave it an almost apple liqueur-like character. Not awful, but clearly past it’s prime. Did not age particularly well even in my dark, cool cellar. Ughsmash (3004), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jun 25, 2008 Thanks to David for opening this one! Poured brighter golden with no head sticking around. The aroma was hot with pears and green apples prominently featured.. pale malts supported a bit.. accented by a bit of peppery spicage.. I rather enjoyed it at this point. The flavor was hot again and not as well done.. light fruity and honey sweetness supported a lot of paint-stripping heat, especially at the back-end.. lighter fruit skins have a sour impression that didn’t help so much. Medium-bodied and hot on the palate with dry, lower-carbonated feel on the palate.. I felt every bit of the 11% in here! 1FastSTi (2388), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Jun 25, 2008 Pours to a clean golden body that looks like cognac. No head. The aroma is pears and green/yellow apples with a nice yeasty Belgian thing. The flavor is alcoholic pears and yellow apples with mild notes of grain. Some yeasts. The palate is a bit hot. Medium bodied with a sticky feel. Ofortuna (310), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA Jun 21, 2008 750ml bottle. Full 1 and a half inch think yeast sediment on the bottom of the bottle. Geez, ’04 Dark Lord-esque.....AND that’s where the comparison’s end.
Some nice fruity esters on the aroma. Decanted perfectly so as not to disturb the freakish sediment on the bottom. No head, low carbonation. Some fusels in here. A bit of green apple. Very dry finish. Warming sensation on the way down. More phenolics coming through.
Underwhelming to say the least. edden (913), cow- lumbus, Ohio, USA May 4, 2008 4/22/08: Bottle Breadie, yeastie nose. Sun ripened yellow body. Flavor is yeastie with ripe peach tones and a bit of nectar.
