BBC Nut Brown Ale has a diverse grain bill which lends this traditional English ale a variety of flavors that coalesce into a remarkably smooth and pleasant drink. Additions of various pale, caramel and dark malts create a smooth, sweet malt profile with hints of roasted nuttiness. Multiple additions of English hops round out the flavors and give this classic beer a true flavor of the Old World.

Dark Brown with a good head. Not much aroma. Weak flavor and lacks hops in the finish. Undewhelming.

Poured into a perfect pint. 2.75 A: Dark amber color. Two fingers of foamy beige head. Retention is below average and just a few wisps of lacing are left. 3.75 S: Toasty with a hefty batch of nuttiness. Itís a sweet nuttiness like those nuts with the crispy sugary coating. The last aspect of this beer is like a dog kibble, which isnít necessarily a bad thing. Overall itís not bad and I do enjoy the potency. 3.25 T: Again lots of nuttiness and toasted malts. A woody flavor enters the fray. Then thereís a strange flavor. It tastes like toffee if all the sugar was removed. I think this is the same aspect of the brew that gives the dog kibble aroma. Anyway, itís not bad, but it could use some refinement. 3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy and smooth. 3.25 D: Not the best, but itís tasty enough to recommend giving it a try. ★ 870 characters DavoleBomb, Jul 11, 2013

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled in 7/2014. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, plum, apple, nuttiness, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, nuttiness, light chocolate, herbal, light plum/apple, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, nuttiness, light chocolate, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good robustness and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a nice English brown ale. All around good robustness and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Old rating. 12oz bottle from old town. Caramel and toffee on the nose. Taste is more of the same but not very well done. Slightly watery. Metallic notes from the bottle. Not very good.

As bad as the Nut Brown "lambic" was a few years ago it may have been an improvement on this mockery of a style. The only thing that it manages to get right is the experience of drinking at a pub which has not taken good care of its casks and lines and is serving flat infected product. Thereís no reason to buy this unless you want to catch up on the backlog of Bluegrass beers or tick everything available in the state.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid brown base looks more like iced tea than a balanced brown ale. The lactic feel sticks in the air with a cloying nature. Mildly malty, the presence almost manages to bring back to mind any number of mediocre British offerings. It even fails at that.

Flavor / Palate - An unintentional sour funk gnaws at the palate. Malt vinegar washes over the tongue with a dash of fish and chips. The most British thing about this release, it soon fades to a forgettable background texture. The only good aspect is the fact that it could have been worse. I now know why I have basically sworn off BBC in general except for extreme circumstances where BMC style drafts are the only options. Even then I might at least choose a Guinness instead.

On tap at East Nashville Beer Festival 2014. Nutty aroma and flavor. Just what I was expecting. It seemed to me that a lot of the small brewers at this festival were trying to be respectful of traditional european styles, but falling short of being interesting. This beer is an example of how to accomplish that feat.
