1.3 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 9/20 farmboy (218) - Barwon Heads, - AUG 27, 2003
Wasn't overly impressed by this beer but could easily sit down and scoff three or four in a sitting without wincing too much. Not bad, not great
4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 nobbles (1) - Townsville, AUSTRALIA - AUG 15, 2005 does not count
Pale amber
yellow white foamy head.
Faint caramel when cold and a roasted malt toffee sweet aroma on glass swirl. Medium thin body with nice brit ale mouthfeel. Floral hoppy bitter flavoured start. Woody slightly malty sweeter middle and medium light bitter finish. The best boags beer brewed so far, clearly better than other australian beers
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 highlandlad (1325) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - JAN 19, 2005
Comfortably Boags’ best beer. A commemorative ale released in 2002 to mark the brewer’s 120th birthday. Brewed in the style of one of the brewer’s original ales from 1881. Pours a deep amber colour with a fair lacy head. Inviting rich, hoppy nose, with some spice to it. Medium-bodied. Big malty flavours at first but it goes AWOL in the middle before a mild bitter finish. Quite a warming, flavoursome style by current Aussie mainstream standards. (Bottle)
2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Spiesy (2336) - Sydney, Greater London, AUSTRALIA - APR 21, 2004
Bottled, with Sats, in Sydney. Amber with a lacy grey head. Distant hope and malt aromas. The flavour arrives from a slightly sweet base and fails to go on from there. Shy and withdrawn the 1881 design is a little too much like alcohol in a glass for the more flavour seeking palates. Soft, jammy end notes fail to impress.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 beerledgend (1050) - Waterloo, Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - JAN 13, 2004
rich dark amber colour, huge white head, sweet malty aroma. better cold as it warmed up became very soapy. I think had been on the shelf since 1881. thanks Neil.
1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20 eczematic (1297) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - DEC 2, 2003
better than the honey porter i suppose. nasty, dirty hops with faint honey in the odour. nutty, bready, syruppy malt and an ugly, alcoholic, rough, bitter and astringent finish. at least it's not flavourless, just bad.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 bfgill (120) - Tasmania, AUSTRALIA - OCT 11, 2003
You can tell its a boags beer. Typical ale, fruity flavours, malty goodness - overall quite a smooth little drop. cheers
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 grant60 (185) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 26, 2003
i was surprised by this beer. i had it at a nightclub, which is a strange place to sell this beer. i had to drink it out of the bottle, so i couldn't tell you what it looked like. it was malty slightly toffee like, and fruity and sweet. it has the same floral aroma and fruity taste that all of boags beers have.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20 Sully (1378) - Potts Point, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA - MAY 20, 2003
This was released to counter the debut Cascade 1st Harvest brew. It was actually planned for release in 2001 to celebrate its 120th birthday but the release of their low alcohol rubbish trumped it. Once again a lost opportunity to impress. Good crystal malt colour and reasonable body make it ok, but I think the late hopping comment is a bit rich. If I miss a train I never catch it. They missed the train. To say this is the best beer from a macro could be true, but what a shame.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 OlJuntan64 (1266) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - OCT 30, 2002
Pale amber clear under a large lasting yellow white lumpy foamy head. Faint caramel and golden syrup aroma when cold and a roasted malt toffee sweet aroma on glass swirl. Medium thin body with nice brit ale mouthfeel. Floral hoppy bitter flavoured start. Woody slightly malty sweeter middle and medium light bitter finish. My favorite Boags so far.
