3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Capones for Black Friday. Black with a ruby hue and a thin white ring around the outside of the glass. Roasted malts, bittersweet chocolate, anise, and alcohol. Average body and low carbonation, moderate sweetness with an alcohol prickle, strong malt, finish is heavy on the syrup and sweetness. I found this got much better when I forgot about it for almost 30 minutes and then rediscovered the glass - needs some time to breath and settle.

Draught at Capone’s: Aroma of cola, chocolate, milk, malt, and some general sweetness. Poured very dark brown/ruby/very deep amber in color with a small, creamy, dense, tan head that lasted throughout. A little hazy. Lightly sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is medium to heavily sweet. Tastes of malt, coffee, roasting, hops, slight alcohol, chocolate, and milk. Medium to full body. Dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Malt, chocolate, roasting, slight hops, light coffee finish is dry. 13%ABV is slightly noticeable in the initial flavor, but generally hidden throughout.

2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Draft at Capones in Norristown, PA.
Pours pitch black with a half finger beige head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lace left behind.
Sweet, boozy aroma with a subtle roasted malt presence. Hints of chocolate, toffee, coffee bean, toast and lots and lots of alcohol.
Thinner bodied than expected with an explosion of sweet, boozy heat that dominates the flavor, overpowering the pleasant malt character of the base beer. Really hot the whole way through with plenty of warmth in the finish. Underneath the malt backbone struggles against the ethanol. Subtle hints of toast, dark chocolate and coffee.
This beer is a mess with way too much heat and alcohol flavor. The base beer isn’t the greatest example of the style but I would still like to taste it. It was difficult to finish the 5oz. sample.

Draft at Capone’s. You’d think "eising" an imp stout would be cool but if you think about it.... Black pour with little head. Very thin flavors and mouthfeel and everything. Metallic tastes all over.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
In short: A bland boozy beer. Meh.
How: Tap at Capones PA, first RBSG 2011 bus-trip pit-stop
The look: Black body topped by a very small brown head
In long: Nose is simple alcohol fumes and some burnt fruits. Taste is burnt fruits, booze, roast, black coffee, thick toffee, a bit of chocolate. Low carbonation. I expected this beer to be a brutal assault on my palate and instead what I got was a rather mundane boozy beer that wasn’t really aggressive. Nothing much to add here other than Boaks fails once again to impress me with yet another beer that is not very drinkable, a boring brewery. Boaks, contributing to a more sober New-Jersey since 2007.
