Hoppbier is our little nod to the amazing pilsners from Northern Germany...with a little love from New Zealand hops. We crafted this beer with only the best German pilsner malt, then loaded it up with some choice Kiwi hops (including late boil hop bursting & dry hopping). Sure we could have made some bland, flavourless lager to appeal to the masses, but if we wouldn’t drink the beer, how could we expect you to? When we drink Hoppbier, memories of beer gardens in the north of Germany with their wonderfully hoppy pilsners all come flooding back... Ingredients: MALT - German Pilsner Malt, German Carapils; HOPS - NZ Hallertau Aroma, Riwaka, Motueka; Pilsner yeast; water.

Pours a clear pale straw colour with a thin white head. Aromatic hops - pine, grassy, citric notes, passion fruit, lychee, straw/hay and flowers. full bodied with good bitterness and malt profile, finishes clean, dry and crisp with lingering flavour. This beer is complex and smashable, a great contribution to the Australian beer scene.

Surprise package - tasty hoppy lager - nice bitter finish - not recognisably German, this is uniquely Southern Hemisphere with maybe a nod to Mikkeller’s American Dream - will have to taste another soon!

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2011 A great modern example of a New World pilsner. Pours a lovely straw gold, with a good sized head that stays until the end (albeit a little smaller). Aroma is nice and fruity, with lychee, passion fruit & citrus. Some good malt aroma behind it all as well. As shambles pointed out, nice to see the listing of ingredients on the packaging... and such good quality ingredients by the taste of it - fruity, citrus, with a well balanced bitterness. Palate is full, which really works with this beer. As the label says, ideal for a beer garden on a hot day. Speaking of which, as a Melbournite, i find the label really works - very "rock music poster"... Maybe things move a little slower up in the Blue Mountains.... ;-)

Bottle. Pours a nice light golden straw with largish white head. Nice looking beer. Nice grainy ho aromas nicely offset by citrusy hops. Quite subtle but good all the same. The grainy malt follows through to the flavours with good resiny hop bitterness on the finish. Medium mouthfeel. This is a really good beer. Enjoyed it.

Light golden colour with moderate carbonation and a white head. Aroma is hops and wheat. Light taste of hops, with a bitter after taste. Refreshing, not bad.

From a 330ml bottle on 24/1/2011. Has a mild aroma of sweet malt and grass. There’s a strong Euro malt flavour, with a light dash of citrus fruit. Finishes with a good, lingering hop kick. All up, a pretty good crack at a pilsener.

Pours gold with a small head. Nose shows a fair bit of fruity hops and some faint bready malt. Very similar flavours, faint fruity hops and a lot of sweet cookie dough-like malt. Finished with a somewhat sharp bitterness. Carbonation could be higher just to dry out the finish a bit.

Bright gold with an inch of very white head that fades quickly to a coat. Medium bead. Hay and hop nose: the Kiwi influence is there (passionfruit, gooseberries), but mingled with earth and meadows. Quite fruity and sweet with orange and passionfruit. Quite prominent bitterness. The new world influence is slightly greater in the taste, but not to the point of clashing - more of a twist on more traditional pilsners. Not bad, but a little too much sweetness and fruit for me.

Bottle 330ml. Nice pilsner. Aromas of honey, flowers, and pine. Taste starts sweet, with a lingering bitter finish. Palate is oily, with a thin-to-medium body. Yellow, bubbly, with a head that doesn’t last.
