COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The name says it all, no regrets here taking a stout, brewing it with just the right amount of Pippali (Piper longum) in the kettle, fermenting with Belgian ale yeast that produced a pepper ester & dry-nibbed in the serving tank with cacao! A dark chocolate & ginger aroma fills the nose before you take a sip. Flavors of “roast barley” are then subdued with a pepper “heat” which stands out with dry chocolate & espresso notes that linger on the finish.

On tap at Bobcat.
Appearance : Pitch black.
Aroma : Peppery and chocolate-y.Some roasted malt too. Very peppery and rich.
Taste : Peppery with some chocolate. Roasted malt. Finish is quite roasty with lots of pepper and nice dark chocolate. Light caramel too.
Overall : Very tasty beer. I was surprised that the mix between pepper and chocolate was so well executed. Carbonation was a bit flat though.

In short: Strong spiciness, chocolate and hard candies all clash together in this puzzling light dark ale. Not my thing.
How: Tap at brewpub, was 4.2% on the menu I think, seems like a lighter version than what other people had
The look: Near black body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose has all kind of spices like black pepper, anise, ginger, more… Not much else than spiciness in the aroma. Body is rather light, almost watery. Taste is Taste brings forth all of the spiciness of the aroma along with chocolate/cacao and hard-candies reminiscent of purple life-savers. This beer wasn’t really my cup of tea. Mostly because it was a pint of beer. Also it was not really my type of beer.

VTHopHead (1387) - Barre, Vermont, USA - SEP 25, 2011
Draft (sample) at SIPtemberfest 2011 - Pours a very dark brown/black in color with a small medium dark tan head that faded to a rim around the top of the beer. Aroma is a complex mix of dark roasted malts, chocolate and (of course) the pippali. Flavor is mostly about the Belgian yeast and the esters that it produced, the pippali and the chocolate. The pepper spiciness and the chocolate linger into the finish... excellent!

Draft at brewpub. Pours a deep black color with a nice brown head. Aroma was malty with light pepper and a touch of smoke. Smooth flavor of creamy chocolate, dark malts and a hint of pepper.

Had this during the Backwoods Brewdown up at Hill Farmstead. Pours a deep black with a thin beige head. Huge pepper, big bright pepper fruit and cocoa. Big cocoa flavors, pepper is a bit lighter here. Long and smooth. Very interesting beer.
