Too many sour ales are one dimensional and lacking in depth. Not so with this one. There was a sweet and savory presence that supported and was uplifting to the tart and sour notes. One of the best I have had in this style. +++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy dark brown color with a medium sized fluffy orange-tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sour and tart with notes of cherry, oak, plum and faint savory spices and bread. The flavor had an initial burst of tar and sour citric acid and lactic acid followed by oak, honey, sourdough bread and followed again by more lactic and citric acid. The flavor blend and support each other as they wash over in waves and each sip begins the whole cycle over again. The finish was long, tart and sour yet remained rich and vibrantly malty. Fairly full bodied. Amazing.

Dark brown beer with a red-orange shine, good head, just should hold maybe some longer. Smell is sour-sweet fruits, caramel. Same with the taste, it’s drinkeable for someone not really loving this style of beer.

feisty you are! .. . pours a deep ruby .. light head, light lacing .. . i can’t believe you lost the muff mobile .. . fantastic taste and feel, good stuff .. . . Yes, it’s a Cinquecento Hawaii, but it’s also freedom. It’s the possibility of driving our own destiny. We can be what we want now, push our lives literally in the direction we want them to...oh Christ, is that a tape deck?

Bottle from Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville. Great label. Pours brownish red, clear, without much head. Sweet nose of caramel, wood, cherry skins. Hint of wet dog. Tastes a bit sweeter after a brief tart hint. Bit of metallic finish. A little prickly with carbonation but thin overall, as is the taste.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Honestbrewer2 (16) - Oakland, California, USA - DEC 23, 2011
I absolutely loved this beer. A beautiful ruby color. An amazing sour cheery aroma. A nice sour cherry taste with hints of cinnamon and apple. The medium body and malt is in amazing balance with the sourness. This beer goes down amazingly smooth with a sour/sweet aftertaste that is very welcoming. Flanders Red are very difficult beer and I find that the balance is always a little off, but this beer is spot on.
