Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a bottom-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Ar: Cherry, lactic and vinegar acid smells, some dark bread. Ap: Cloudy brown with a small light tan head - low retention, but a ring of lacing remains. T: Tart grape and raisin - some cherry and sweet wheat bread - low bitterness with fruit character dominating finish - sour character is moderate overall. P: Medium-light body with high carbonation - finish is dry. O: Easy-drinking oud bruin - nothing too fancy or complex, but tasty and well-made.

750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, tan head, with some lacing, over a clear light copper brown body....nose is sour cherry, plum, light acetic acid....taste is sour cherry, raisin, fig, light acetic acid, bit of barnyard funk, finishing lightly tart....mouth feel light, minimally astringent, carbonation high, adding a prickly tone. This is a delicious example of the style of a Flanders Red Ale. The aroma, flavors, and complexity of all are spot on. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7

11.2oz bottle. Nice thin tan head, leaving some lace, but no where near as much is in the picture provided here. Clear darker red / brown color. lighter soft carbonation, dry texture, but some stickiness in the aftertaste. Slightly dark fruit aroma, figs, plums. Nice light sour taste. Decent, but not the most drinkable or refreshing thing. Too soft for my liking, with a not very interesting aroma

UPDATED: JUL 20, 2012 A great flemish red (/sour aged brown) that is smoother than Petrus Oud Bruin, but not as good as a Queu de Charrue. So very close, but not quite. Excellent.

Bottle at Belgian Beer Weekend, Osaka. Nice nose of cherry, vinegar, chocolate. Light to medium sourness, a bit of cardboard, cherries, not overly sweet. good but not great, and completely destroyed by the Rodenbach GC I had next to it.

In bottle at the Red Rose. Pours a brown colour with a decent beige head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, yeast and alcohol. Similar flavours with a lovely sour pickled onion character. Moderate carbonation and light CO2 prickle with a foamy mouth-feel. Lovely.
