Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new ťlan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

I had recently had my first flemish red, and this brew seems very similar. Light cherry and sour dominate this one for me. I must say, however itís classified, it has a fruitiness that Iím surprised that I find enjoyable. With the 5.5 abv I could easily see myself making a session out of this one.

A pleasant sour aroma. An opaque brown pour with rubby highlights and a small mostly diminishing khaki head with no lacing. The taste is initially sour, followed by soft sweet finish. Medium body with soft carbonatin. Overall, another wonderful sour beer that I want to drink again.

Bottle 33 cl, BBE 10/2013. Pours brown in color with small tan head. Some brown sugary notes in aroma at first and faint hints of some sour vinegary like notes as well. Nice sour and sweet taste, which feels to be very well in balance. Notes of chewy wheat and sourness. Liked the combination in this beer. Great beer. Sour and light vinous and perhaps some sweet berry-like notes in aftertaste.

Bottle. Clear deep red brown with minimal light brown head. A fruity aroma with hints of caramel. Medium sour and light on the bitterness. Light body and quite thin texture. Short finish. A very refreshing beer but a little to thin in aroma and taste to be top notch.

0.25l bottle. This is a clear deep dark blood-orange red beer with a small quickly sidesticking and light bubbly off-white top. It has an aroma of light dusty cellar with some sour red berries and a slight coca cola-sweetness. It smells like an oud bruin alright. Itís average+ on the carbonation and it has a thin oily mouthfeel. Itís quite sweet this, more red berries only a bit thin and watery - with some really soft woody touches as well. In many ways this reminds me of coca cola (back in the days I drank that stuff) ends with a tart hint. Really subtle and careful this, and even though itís in a strange way a bit refreshing, itís definitely not to overexciting in my book. 05.11.2012

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2014 January 2013. Draft at Eulogy. Poured a clear dark ruby red brown. Minimal head. Sweet and sour. Chewy but also lots of juicy red fruits. Bing cherries. Plum wine. Balsamic vinegar. Clean finish. Somewhat like a reduced and clarified Flemish Red. UPDATE: May 2014. Having in the bottle (also at Eulogy). Similar flavors but body now feels bigger and broader yet better blended and refined. Will bump up slightly.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet. Cola colr. Bittersweet beer, a lovely sour edge creeps in, but overall there is too much sugar in this.

What more do you want in an affordable Flemish brown? Classic sweet balsamic aromas and flavors.. Balanced carbonation, tartness and clean, mouthwatering finish. Not ground breaking, though a classic example. Great for those new to the style. Very friendly. Recommended. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

Pretty decent sour. Taste is fruity, sour, vine, dry finish. Nice surprise though.
