Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet. Cola colr. Bittersweet beer, a lovely sour edge creeps in, but overall there is too much sugar in this.

What more do you want in an affordable Flemish brown? Classic sweet balsamic aromas and flavors.. Balanced carbonation, tartness and clean, mouthwatering finish. Not ground breaking, though a classic example. Great for those new to the style. Very friendly. Recommended. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

Deep smell of stables, raisins and esters. Good carbonation. Taste is sweet and a bit bitter, but not so acidic in the aftertaste as i would like.

Pours dark amber with an off-white head. Some nose of esters and mild fruityness. Mild aroma of fruity esters and mild sour. Not bad, but lacking compared ti other wild ale, but considered it’s blended, fairly good.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet Manglerud enjoyed at home as Vanderghinste Oud Bruin
Pours dark brown with a big tanned head. Smells of caramel, malts, some hops and yeast esters. Taste is moderate sweet, some light to moderate acids, some fruityness and caramel. Moderate bitter finish. A very nice beer. Opposite to most beers this one mostly is a flavorish beer, not that aroma intense. Really good flavors though, very harmonic

Bottle from Vinmonopolet, under its alias Vanderghinste Oud Bruin. Clear red-brown-purple color. Small head which hangs around on the edges of my glass. Both aroma and flavor is dominated by wood and dark cherries. Some red wine-ish notes. Some vague spicy notes too. Nice low amount of sourness - I’m tempted to call it subtle. A small amount of sweetness in the aftertaste, along with some artificial bubblegum flavors. Very easy to drink. Reminds me a little bit of the concentrated "juice" my grandmother used to make from red and black currants (wikipedia says that’s called a "squash"). Rather light body, refreshing carbonation. Good stuff!
