Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Deep brown with a cream head. Wood, lightly tart, vinous, cherry, and bugs. Easy palate, yeast, tart, bitter, and a nice finish.

250mL bottle, pours a very deep dark maroon / brown with a small beige head. Nose brings out slightly tart dark fruits, some slight vinegary tones, and a little funk - not the most aromatic beer though. Flavour brings out caramel malts, dark fruits with an every so subtle tartness, prominent oak barrel presence, and some residual sweetness. Not very tart at all, nor do I detect any lambic-like qualities. Not the most complex Flanders brown, but well-enough brewed to be enjoyable. Solid.

Small bottle from Liquor Barn in North Burnaby. Generous tan head on a dark reddish brown beer. Fruity on the nose. In the mouth it’s a milder sour ale. A big sour ale would be one like Storm Imperial Flanders Red, which I find a bit too heavy on the sour side, except to sip tweenst other beers. Nice!

Bottle from Asahiya. Nose of mulled wine, with light vinegar and a bit of funk. Slick, near oily, surface. Dark tea color. Tart fruity initial, with berries and sour apple / turns more sour in mid palate. Minimal hop presence until the very end. Medium body, astringent. Very nice. Doesn’t go too far with the pucker factor.

Draft at craft ale house. Pours reddish brown with a small off white head. The aroma has tart cherries, slight vinegar, fairly sweet finish. The taste is sweet cherry, tart cherry overtakes, finishes with a slightly vinegar note. I dig it.

Lasting off-white foaming head with a deep red body. Nose of sour cherries, balsamic vinegar and tires. Some mild sweetness with underwhelming tart cherries, wax candles and watery wine. Good.
