Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a bottom-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

On reconnaît des arômes de sa grande soeur la cuvée des jacobins. Une acidité agréable. Une légère amertume, un sucre résiduel. Des arômes madérisés. Bref encore une belle réalisation.

Pours ruby brown with off white head, some lacing. Nose is tart fruit, mild vinegar acidic notes, overripe cherries, dough. Really tasty beer - flavor is fully and mildly sweet upfront, some nice texture and umami in the middle, end begins tart in the sides of the mouth, but finishes with caramel sweetness and just a touch of bitter resin. Maybe more pedestrian that some of the artisanal sours out there but judged on its own terms this is really stellar, if the price wasn’t so high it would be highly quaffable.

Burgundy colour. Aroma is nice vinegary malts - Classic Flanders style here. Taste is quite sweet with some big candy sugar flavours. Sickly. Finishes with a tangy yeasty quality. Wish the beer followed through on the smell!

Light reddish brown with a pale head. Aroma is dates, sour dark cherries, red wine vinegar, rose water, overripe strawberries, plums. Medium-light bodied, fruity on the palate with a lightly acetic tartness on the finish. Taste is plums, grapes, blueberries, rosé, hint of cherry. Easy drinking.

BOTTLE 25CL from dcmchew. Thanks! Look: red-brown clear, beige frothy to creamy head. Aroma: acid/acetic with quite a bit of sweet malts. Taste: moderate sourness with and acetic edge, (over-)balanced by a hefty malt backbone. A tad of hop bitterness maybe.

25cl bottle, labeled Vanderghinste oud bruin. BBE 280115. Mahogany color, thin, but lasting white head. Caramel in the back, sour berries up front, hint of vinegar in aroma. Flavor the same really, some tartness, sweet berries, cherry notes. Long finish with notes of cherries and raspberries. Tasty.

Flasche (als "Vander Ghinste Oud Bruin", 25 cl). - Tiefes Rotbraun, klar. - In der Nase angenehm säuerliche Frucht (Brombeere oder Schwarze Johannisbeere), Aceto balsamico, Holz. - Antrunk spritzig säuerlich, etwas stumpf und leicht süß, Boskoop-artig. Mild rezent, schlank, sehr erfrischend.
