Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

0.25 bottle at some beer place in Bruges, Belgium. Nice brown colour, nice label for a classic beer. Taste is a bit difficult to describe, except it does not taste similar to most beers. Basically this is a sour beer combined with some sweetness as in lambic based beers but this is based on brown beer. Despite the dark colour I could drink this during a hot summer day.

Pours a ruby red with a sour malt aroma. Taste is similar, with a sour apple and grape flavor. A very dry beer, that had no distinct aftertaste.

Serving: from bottle--purchased at The Beer Junction. Aroma: light floral hops and citrus. Appearance: small, frothy, light-brown initial head with fair lacing and mostly diminishing longevity. Clear, dark-orange body. Taste: lightly sour initial flavor and lightly sour, horse-blanket finish with average duration. Palate: light body, dry texture and fizzy carbonation. Overall: very good.

Bottle 25cl from Bierhalle De Koninck, @ home. Nice dark red color, big white foam. Aroma is quite hidden, the taste is a bit sweet with some sourness. Good one.

Keg at Capital Ale House Innsbrook. As Vanderghinste. Pours a clear copper with a medium sized creamy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of tart cherries, stone fruit, mild vegetal notes. The taste is tart cherries, stone fruit, earth, acetic sourness. Medium bodied, mild lingering tartness. 9800th rating.

25cl bottle, and had it as ’VanderGhinste Oud Bruin’. The lovely dark red, even brownish body is accompanied by a light red gloom. The very vivid and sparkling liquid - due to the lively carbonation - adds to the aroma of the old brown. It has notes of cherry and even caramel. It’s a perfect "foeder", which can be preserved long after its bottle date. The medium body, the very long ending, the sweet sour notes combined with the bitter mouth: A great drink and the best thirst quencher. Good to know that there is still a batch of fifty bottles in my beer cellar.
