Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

From bottle to tulip. Slight tart and cherry create a delicate pleasing aroma. There is a freshness about the aroma like a crisp spring day. Pours moderately low hazy with tan head that prevails as a full collar creating ridges up the side of the glass. Taste is a fine balance of cherry and sourness. Refreshing on the front palate, there is a bitterness in the back half that detracts from the overall enjoyment of the beer. Would pair well with a roasted turkey. Tasty, and I would enjoy trying it again on a sunny day as opposed to indoors at night!

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Beermerchants. Pours mostly clear ruby brown with a creamy, light beige head. Tart berries in the aroma, some brown bread, raspberry, cherry. Light to medium sweet flavor with nice jammy berry sugars, more raspberry and cherry, mellow acidity, undertones of brown sugar, prune. Light bodied with average, spritzy carbonation. Pleasantly, refreshingly tart on the finish, with more sweet berries, light cleansing acidity, just a touch of damp and musty wood. It’s certainly not the most complex beer around, but it is tasty, nicely balanced and incredibly drinkable, so in those regards it is a really good beer.

Pours a nice deep and dark copper/amber color. Impressive head at first, but quickly recessed down to a 1 finger level. After it fades, the lacing is quite nice. Fairly pungent aroma (but not overpowering) of tart fruit (plum, peach, grape). There is a slight sour vinegar smell. Smells sweet and a bit of caramel. Instant dry bite just before the sour starts in. The sour flavor isn’t that strong but it is present. There is a nice tart fruit / white and red wine rush that mixes with the sour and a hint of vinegar. This is a bit lighter on flavor than I expected. It gets a bit sweet, but then dries out once again as it trails off. Fairly full medium body. Remains quite effervescent the whole time in the glass. Dries out towards the end. Decent sour / our bruin. Seems a bit lighter on flavor than others that I have had. Not very sour and sweeter than some. I do like it as extremely sour beers are just too acidic. Quite pleased and would purchase again.
