Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Vanderghinste Oud Bruin 5.5% Aged in oak barrels for 18 months with a cool label that stepped out of the 1940s. A reddish-mahogany with a filmy beige head, this beer has an oaky aceitic tangy aroma. Medium bodied the flavor on this is really drinkable with a sandpapery mouthfeel. I love the 25cl size which is perfect for people who like trying many various brews. The taste is sweetly tart, vinous, raisins, mildly acidic, and malty bready goodness. For I believe about 500¥ this is an incredibly approachable Oud Bruin. Paired with a Black Masala Chai chocolate bar it went from good to amazing.

Abv 5,5. Brown color liquid, mellow acidity with some notes of musty and cherry. Very drinkable oak aged Flandern red ale.

From bottle to tulip. Slight tart and cherry create a delicate pleasing aroma. There is a freshness about the aroma like a crisp spring day. Pours moderately low hazy with tan head that prevails as a full collar creating ridges up the side of the glass. Taste is a fine balance of cherry and sourness. Refreshing on the front palate, there is a bitterness in the back half that detracts from the overall enjoyment of the beer. Would pair well with a roasted turkey. Tasty, and I would enjoy trying it again on a sunny day as opposed to indoors at night!

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Beermerchants. Pours mostly clear ruby brown with a creamy, light beige head. Tart berries in the aroma, some brown bread, raspberry, cherry. Light to medium sweet flavor with nice jammy berry sugars, more raspberry and cherry, mellow acidity, undertones of brown sugar, prune. Light bodied with average, spritzy carbonation. Pleasantly, refreshingly tart on the finish, with more sweet berries, light cleansing acidity, just a touch of damp and musty wood. It’s certainly not the most complex beer around, but it is tasty, nicely balanced and incredibly drinkable, so in those regards it is a really good beer.
