Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2015 From Beer Temple. I love this style. This one started quite tart and then smoothed out rapidly. Thin body, not as tart or sweet as other bruins. Quite refreshing. Serving: Bottle

C'est sirupeux et sucré au nez. En bouche, c'est riche, onctueux, sucré et vinaigré. La finale est sucrée, acide et râpeuse légèrement. Bien bon ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very nice traditional Flemish red/brown. Decent appearance with lovely clear garnet color and some head with a bit of lace. Rich aroma of caramel, wine must, a little fruit. Flavor’s like nose with strong sweet tart character up front and and finishes moderately. Good body that fits the style. Does seem a tad boozy at the very end. Quite drinkable.

250 ml bottle, as VanderGhinste Oud Bruin, brewed at Brouwerij Bockor Kortrijk, BB date 06.06.2013, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.5%. Deep brownish red colour, moderate off-white head. Interesting sourish aroma of oak, farmhouse, red wine and red wine vinegar, spicy notes too. Medium sour and fairly sweet flavour, fruity and vinous notes, the hops are hardly noticeable.

11.2 oz single bottle from Biggie Wine & Liquor. Deep ruby red, purplish and clear appearance with a nice, lingering tan head and light lacing. The aroma is tart cherries, dark sour fruits, light funky yeast, oak, vanilla and a touch of caramel and toffee. Similar flavor, mildly sour with a moderate fruity and malty sweetness. Medium body, smooth, soft and easy to drink. A classic. Pairing: Miles Davis - No Blues, 10/28/1967, in Antwerp, Belgium.

11.2 oz. bottle, consumed on 6-23-15. Labeled as “VanderGhinste Oud Bruin.” Labeled "04 14," which makes me think it was bottled in April 2014. Amber. Moderate amount of beige head. Malty, lightly tart aroma. Some spice in the smell. Apple pie and caramel scents. Tart, dry flavor. Lemon juice, light white vinegar. Lightly mineral. Black pepper. Nice beer, not special, and it is subtle, but I like it. Light to medium body. Soft in the palate. Slightly better than my score would indicate, and that caused me to give an extra point in the overall score.

Bottle at beerbistro. Tart smell of musty grapes. Very dark brown with thin white head. Lovely lightly sour taste with some sweetness. Yum.

Pours a dark brown/red color with a decent head. Aroma is sour and tart, slight malt, weak sweetness. Taste is more sweet than anything else, slight red berry taste, maybe some cherry, then a very weak sour on the end. Decent but not the best Flanders Ale.

On tap at the Yard House in Atlanta. Clear mahogany body with a very good head. Odd but modestly appealing aroma suggests a very tart ale. Flavor: a mix of sweet and tart with a touch of hop bitterness. Light but not watery body with low-medium carbonation.
