Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

0.25 l bottle from De Bierkoning as ’VanderGhinste Oud Bruin’, best before 6/5/2016. Clear, deep brownish red with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-sourish, fruity-malty aroma of vinegar, bitter almond, red wine, dark cherries and oak. Sweetish-sourish, fruity-malty taste of vinegar, red wine, bitter almond, dark cherries and oak, followed by a short, tart and oaky finish. Medium body, slightly astringent and spritzy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nicely balanced, aromatic and refreshing, but not overly deep or complex. Still nice!

Brown with a ruby glow. Fermenting fruit, fig compote, wine gums candy. Nice stuff, good makes to back up the funk. Stronger sourness in the taste, still fruity malts, sharp wine vinegar ending. I dig the brown malt and sour combo. Bit more aging and it would be excellent (33cl bottle from ABC Drinks Prik&Tik Leuven)
