Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a bottom-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

A decent sour. Aromas are vinegar, red wine, and some sweetness. Hints of bubblegum flavour along with sour cherries and vinous qualities. nice.

Classic oud bruin since the 19th century, tasted both as Bellegems Bruin and as Vanderghinste Oud Bruin (its new name since 2012), made in the ’lambic’ barrels of this Western Flemish family brewery. Thin, pale beige, sticky, very stable head, colour a pretty warm bronze with ruby hue, clear. Aroma of fruity esters and tartness, passion fruit, sherry vinegar, yoghurt, elderberries, pear syrup, cloves, gooseberries, lemon zest, vanilla, some faint woodiness. Vivid estery fruitiness in the onset, red berries, lemony acidity in a gentle and elegant way, fresh lactic acidity too (sour cream), smooth caramelly malts in the background, dryingly tart finish, somewhat vinous, long with a brief and very subtle hoppiness, as typical for the style. A classic in its genre and the most interesting of the regularly and easily available Bockor beers.

bottle. Reddish tinged brown with one finger head. There’s nothing really wrong with this, but it’s not nearly as flavorful as some of the better examples of this style. Sour with mild cherry. Minimal sweetness.

A bit sweet for an oud bruin but I really like this beer. Good carbonation & nice barnyard aroma. Very solid and I really enjoyed this. My wife who is not a big sour fan even found some joy in this one.

From AJ’s. Nose is vegetal and berry-filled. Appearance is clear dark orange/brown. Little lacing. Taste starts quite tart, shocking, then mellows quickly. Lots of small bubble carbonation, sugar, fruit. Palate has a nice thick feel, but finishes rather neutral. Good.

There seems to be some debate about whether Bockor Bellegems Bruin is a Sour Red/Brown Ale or a Flanders Oud Bruin. I don’t know enough about either style to weigh in, but I can conclusively say that this makes for a fantastic dessert beer. Aroma is malty and fruity, albeit a bit understated. Flavor is more complex than the aroma would lead you to believe. Fruits take the main stage with sour apple, pear, strawberry, raspberry, and black berry. Even while working in the background, malts offer some unique flavors, too: caramel, brown sugar, woodiness, and even a hint of booze. It’s the kind of beer that seems made for a slice of fruit pie, fresh out of the oven.

Bottle. A- Slight funk, malty, wheat, slightly sour. A- Reddish brown color, clear liquid, tan head. T- Black cherry, woody, caramel, smoke, teriyaki sauce, black pepper. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- Quite good for my first sour brown/red. Lots of different flavors on the palate. The aroma was a little lacking but the taste made up for it.

Bottle. Aroma red fruits, straight-forward bretty sourness, cherry. Clear brown colour. Taste is sour, but softly, and balanced with some background malts. Fruity flavour. Rather short finish, easily drinkable. Very good.
