COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a bottom-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Sour dominates this Flanders Brown for me. Flat head, light bitterness and sour aftertaste. Not exactly my favorite style and this may be a basic Sour Ale recipe.

Pours a medium brown color, with a HUGE beige head. Tart and sour, with some light spice notes. A little bit of sweetness, too.

Melanoidin-reddish body with a browned caramel head that flushly covers the glass and settles down nicely. Distinct horsey brett nose punctuated by sweet tart. Mellowed, wood-aged tart and brett-tinged body. The sourness is contained and massaged nicely into a complex experience that does not stray towards extremes. Medium-bodied and fairly sessionable for the style.

Half-pint @ Chuck’s. Tasty sour though rather standard. $10 a pint?!? Good God, man, that’s crazy. Grabbed a half-pint ’cause that’s how I roll. Sour in all the places and very drinkable.

12oz bottle, I believe I got from knightly spirits on orange blossom. Dark brown pour with a slight off-white head. Aroma of tart cherry, light vinegar and wood. Tastes are tart, white grapes, cherry, some dark fruit, and caramel. Sourness putters out a bit in the finish. Crisp and very drinkable overall. Enjoyed it.

330 ml bottle. Pours a red brown with little head. Nose is sour with dark fruit and wood barrel notes. Taste is sour and tart. Crisp when cold. A good intro into the style

Poured from a botetle into a pint glass. Appearance is a dark, slightly mrky brown with a thin head of beige foam. In the aroma is a pleasant green apple tartness with a nice dark candied fruit in the background. In the taste its primarily a pleasant sourness with a nice balance of dark malt sweetness.

Nice pour but the head doesn’t last long like most sours. Sour taste is followed up by a well balanced sweet brown caramel flavor. Not notably sour but a good wild brew.

Bottle. Copper body with very little head. Sweet with a sour finish. Very good Belgian beer for sour heads. Not being one, I was less enamored with it. Good sweet and sour balance. Just short of upper echelon.

This poured a lighter brown color with a biege head. Aroma was sweet cherries, some vinegar, and some cheesy malts. Flavor was moderately sour, but a little sweet, and some toasted oak notes and funk. Ok.

Bottle. Acajou, col fin beige.
