The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

On tap the the Republic in Minneapolis. Deep red-brown body; clear with a thin head that soon reduced to a ring. I had a typical reaction to this in that the aroma was a bit unappealing but the flavor was good However, in this case the aroma was nearly neutral (but too much ’vinegar’) and the flavor was very good. Nicely tart and moderately fruity, O: Excellent for style.

Wow en suröl som doftar komplext lite fruktigt druvigt. Smakar fylligt å väldigt likt en riktigt bra högklassisk cider. Mycket druvjos i smaken.

Puckkker power! That is a nice Flemish Sour Red. Pours a clear red-brown with a bit of white head that reduces to a ring, which sticks around because it just doesn’t want to leave this poor beer alone. The nose is all sour goodness of grapes, wine, a little vinegar and a touch of cherries. Big sour taste, very sharp, but with wine, cherries and a lemon. On the sour end of the sour scale but a real nice sipper if you like the sour beers. If you don’t, don’t bother.

330ml bottle from LCBO, Parkway Mall, Scarborough, ON. 5.5 % alc. / vol. Pours a clear deep amber color with a small white head which recedes to a ring. Wood barrel aroma with notes of hops and cherries. Taste is very sour. Mainly sour cherries, apple and some lemon. Lively carbonation. It doesn’t have that weird kombucha flavour that other sours have. I really enjoyed it.

330ml Bottle from Systembolaget. Mahogany brown with a creamy tan head that quickly disappears. Aroma of cherry, tart, oak, balsamic vinegar. Sweet and greasy mouth feel, mild carbonated. The flavor has pleasant tart, cherry, lemon, red apples, apple cider vinegar, oak barrels. Dry finish.
