The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

330ml bottle (thanks martjoobolut). Clear brown color. Tiny size, white head, stays. Vinegar, sweet, fruity, sake, apples in aroma. Complex aroma. Sour, acidic, fruity, twiggy, sweet in taste. Crisp mouthfeel. Sweet acidic apples and tannins in aftertaste. Nice full body. Very drinkable brew.

330ml bottle - thanks martjoobolut!
Very pleasant sour aroma, gently woody, but not over-oaky, some berry hints. Very sharp palate, lovely sourness, but no vinegar fortunately - this is ageing done correctly. Finish magnificent, the sharp berriness hangs around for ever, and mellows to a lovely sweet red bruin. Balance between sweetness of the base beer and the sourness from the ageing is just right.

Dark reddish amber beer, small off-white head. Nose is fruity, tart, some sugars, red berries. Flavor is tart, dry, woody, berries, fruit. Very tart and dry finish, some citrus, lingering wood and slightly sweet malt. Slightly vinous mouthfeel. Not overly complex bit nocely balanced.

Funky sour smell, ruby red and hazy. Taste is sour and winey, fairly rich body, not too funky, really nice and smooth despite the acidity.

Dark red body with brown reflections; fine bubbles; rather hazy; light beige foam very fine and quickly fading while remaining. Aromas of candied sour cherry, sour apple, woody. In first place, flavors are the same as aromas - delicious; ending is round; a lot of body, with the vividness of sourness. Actually complex and balanced, as indicated by the brewer. Matches very well a potée lorraine.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 23B). Bottle 33 cl - Batch unknown (BBF 13.10.18). AROMA: moderate-high sour aroma, more forward than a moderate orange and red fruits/wine aroma. APPEARANCE: red body with orange highlights and translucent. moderate ivory head with average retention. TASTE: initial sour and acidic flavor with notes of aged red wine, red wine barrel and faint vanilla from wood. malt notes almost absent. low bitterness with an acidic finish. PALATE: medium-low body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: a red flanders with less fruit and malt presence than other examples, giving more emphasis on the sour profile.

Rounding out a week of sampling new new world sours, I grabbed an old world one just before departure. Poured warms it is heavily carbonated with that thin head of a good sour, champagne brown body. The aroma reminds me of my tour in the Cantillon brewery some years back - musty, wood, summer heat in a Brussels park. The flavour is an absolute perfect mix of sourness - light and intense citrus, leaves no cloying notes or weird hints of something else. This is the sour to measure all others by - way up there for sure.

Deep red colour and a thin head. Aroma of glacé cherries, wood and sherry vinegar. First sip is intensely sour but it seems to mellow out slightly later. Fine, intense carbonation. There’s just enough sweetness to tone down the sourness. The cherries are not overwhelming either so in the end it’s alright.
